Do automotive service advisors get paid more than mechanics?

Mechanics usually earn hourly wages or flat rates for labor performed. Overall compensation depends on experience, location, and the specific dealership or repair shop.

How do automotive service advisors get paid?

Automotive service advisors typically earn a combination of a base salary and commissions or bonuses based on the sales of services and parts. They may also receive incentives for customer satisfaction and upselling, with compensation structures varying by dealership or service center.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive service advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Service Advisor, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong customer service abilities, and often a high school diploma or postsecondary automotive training. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), repair order software, and sometimes ASE certification are commonly required. Excellent communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills help build trust with customers and coordinate effectively with technicians. These skills are vital for ensuring customer satisfaction, accurate service recommendations, and efficient workflow in automotive service environments.

What do you need to be an automotive service advisor?

To become an automotive service advisor, you typically need strong communication and customer service skills, knowledge of automotive systems, and experience with repair procedures. A high school diploma or equivalent is usually required, and some employers prefer candidates with prior experience in automotive or sales roles. Certification or training in automotive technology can be beneficial but is not always mandatory.

What are some common challenges automotive service advisors face when balancing customer expectations and repair timelines?

Automotive Service Advisors often face the challenge of managing customer expectations when repairs take longer than anticipated due to parts availability or complex diagnostics. Clear and proactive communication with both customers and the technician team is essential to keep everyone informed and satisfied. Advisors must also manage a high volume of service requests, prioritize urgent repairs, and maintain accurate documentation, all while delivering excellent customer service. Building strong relationships with both customers and technicians can help streamline the process and minimize misunderstandings.

What does an automotive service advisor do?

An Automotive Service Advisor acts as the main point of contact between customers and the service department at an auto repair shop or dealership. They then liaise with the Mechanics or Auto Technicians who make the repairs. As an Automotive Service Advisor, your responsibilities and duties include greeting customers, understanding their needs, communicating those to service providers, working with insurance companies when needed, and ensuring the customer understands the repair or maintenance options they have. Some jobs also require their service advisors to have technician or sales experience so that they can fulfill multiple roles in the company.

Launch Your Automotive Career with One of Minnesota's Premier Honda Dealerships

Buerkle Honda has proudly served the Twin Cities since 1953 and continues to be one of the area's busiest and most respected Honda dealerships. We are looking for an energetic, customer-focused professional to join our award-winning service team as a Full-Time Automotive Service Advisor (Express).

This is a true career opportunity—not just another job. Many of our Senior Service Advisors began their careers in this exact position.

What You'll Do

As an Automotive Service Advisor (Express), you'll be the primary point of contact between our customers and our service team, helping ensure every guest receives an outstanding dealership experience.

  • Explain maintenance recommendations in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Prepare repair estimates and review available service options.
  • Keep customers informed throughout the repair process.

  • Recommend future maintenance based on Honda factory maintenance schedules.

  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience on every visit.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Enjoys helping people and building lasting customer relationships.
  • Maintains a positive, professional attitude.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Is organized and detail-oriented.
  • Communicates effectively with customers and coworkers.
