Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Assistant Director of Student Accounts provides strategic and operational leadership for the University's student billing, accounts receivable, third-party billing, tuition waiver administration, payment plans, refund operations, and specialized student financial programs. Reporting to the Director of Student Accounts and University Cashiers, this position is responsible for directing complex student financial operations, supervising professional staff, ensuring compliance with federal, state, UNC System, and University regulations, and maintaining the integrity of student financial records and institutional receivables.
The Assistant Director serves as the department's senior operational authority for student billing, tuition assessment, third-party billing, military education benefits, payment plan administration, tuition waivers, and student account administration. The position independently administers multiple financial programs requiring advanced accounting knowledge, interpretation of federal and state regulations, financial analysis, and sound professional judgment.
The position supervises the Billing, Refunding, and Third-Party Billing teams while establishing operational priorities, monitoring performance, strengthening internal controls, developing policies and procedures, and leading continuous process improvement initiatives. The Assistant Director collaborates extensively with Financial Aid, the Registrar, Information Technology Services, Enrollment Management, Human Resources, General Accounting, academic departments, and external agencies to ensure accurate billing, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service.
As a member of the Student Accounts and University Cashiers leadership team, the Assistant Director provides strategic guidance to the Director regarding operational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, financial risk, organizational planning, and continuous improvement that supports the University's financial stewardship and student success.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Masters degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelors degree with at least 1 year of supervisory experience and 6+ years of relevant experience .
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, accounts receivable, student financial services, or higher education financial operations.
- Three or more years of supervisory or management experience leading professional staff.
- Experience administering complex student billing, accounts receivable, payment plans, third-party billing, tuition waivers, and financial operations.
- Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience with enterprise financial systems including Banner, TouchNet, SSRS, Ocelot, and related ERP applications.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing student billing, military education benefits, financial aid, tuition waivers, FERPA, GLBA, PCI DSS, Red Flags Rule, and Department of Education requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations, evaluate financial data, and implement operational improvements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex financial information to students, parents, faculty, staff, executive leadership, and external partners.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to develop policies, strengthen internal controls, and lead organizational change in a complex financial environment.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Finance team within the Division of Business Affairs supports the University's mission, strategic vision, goals, and objectives by providing comprehensive financial services that promote sound fiscal stewardship, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, campus departments, and federal, state, and other external stakeholders.
The Student Accounts and University Cashiers Office is responsible for administering the University's student financial operations and serves as the central depository for University revenue. The department manages student billing, cashiering, accounts receivable, student refunds, third-party billing, payment plans, military education benefits, student and non-student collections, departmental receipting, and cash management activities. In addition, the office oversees student financial accounting and reporting, campus financial feeds, Title IV financial aid accounting and federal drawdowns, reconciliation of financial transactions, month-end and fiscal year-end closing activities, and compliance with applicable federal, state, UNC System, and University regulations.
Through these responsibilities, the Student Accounts and University Cashiers Office safeguards University assets, ensures the integrity of student financial records, supports enrollment and student success initiatives, and provides accurate, timely, and efficient financial services to the campus community.
