Responsibilities:
The Video Producer will support Barrow Wise's NSF project and perform the following duties:
  • Understand OLPA strategic communication objectives and conceive and recommend appropriate productions.
  • Provide advice on effective media use for communicating messages to intended audiences.
  • Produce "NSF's Discovery Files Podcast," a weekly video and audio podcast.
  • Ensure all products for internal and external use follow all NSF branding guidelines and are reviewed by the NSF branding team.
  • Work with OLPA teams to plan and develop video programs by transforming communications campaigns/ideas and complex science into production ideas requiring the determination of format, approach, content, and level of presentation.
  • Conduct research to identify potential sources for specific visuals, audio, and video clips, and determine their availability from outside sources.
  • Coordinate with scientists, engineers, OLPA staff, and others to obtain needed materials and to coordinate various aspects of productions.
  • Serve as a multimedia team representative on inter-team projects.
  • Handle internal and external requests for information, footage, and finished products, including corresponding with requestors and providing files.
  • Create and use spreadsheets to assist the team in tracking and filling requests.
  • Perform archiving and other administrative, coordinating, and lower-level technical support duties.
  • Use digital asset management systems to maintain and archive images/multimedia and permission documents.
  • Provide scripting support to the OLPA, including writing treatments and full scripts.
  • Conduct required background research and interviews to inform script development.
  • Serve as lead writer on select projects while coordinating closely with OLPA and NSF staff.
  • Collaborate with university researchers, public information officers, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Provide video editorial services using Adobe Premiere Pro nonlinear editing software.
  • Write and edit articles, white papers, fact sheets, blogs, press releases, web pages, speeches, and other publications on science topics of stakeholder interest, including those addressing significant or potentially controversial topics.
  • Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language for non-expert audiences.
  • Draft and edit web content summarizing policies and guidance for proposers and awardees.
  • Conduct research and fact-checking, collaborating with OLPA staff, program officials, and scientists to ensure accuracy and clarity of all written products.
  • Ensure all products comply with the "Plain Writing Act of 2010" and Section 508 accessibility standards.

An ideal candidate has the following:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a science-related field and ten years of experience
  • Minimum 10 years of professional writing and editing experience, including at least 3 years' experience writing about scientific and technological subjects
  • Experience in translating complex topics into compelling videos for a variety of audiences
  • Experience in developing strategic marketing plans for video and multimedia projects, including broadcast and web-based media entities, partners, collaborators, distributors, and other organizations
