JOB TITLE: Assignment Desk Manager
LOCATION: Houston Texas
N+Univision 45 is looking for an Assignment Desk Editor Manager to join our team!
The News Assignment Desk Manager plays a critical leadership role in the daily newsgathering operation, overseeing the assignment desk and ensuring comprehensive, accurate, and timely coverage across broadcast and digital platforms. This position is responsible for managing breaking news response, guiding editorial decisions, coordinating field crews, and driving enterprise story development that serves the community.

YOUR DAY-DAY: (aka Responsibilities)
  • Lead and supervise the daily operations of the assignment desk, ensuring efficient workflow and clear communication across newsroom teams.
  • Assign, track, and manage news crews, including reporters, photographers, and field personnel.
  • Monitor scanners, social media, wires, and other sources to identify breaking and developing news, respond quickly and decisively.
  • Develop, pitch, and execute daily story ideas, with an emphasis on "NEW, NOW, NEXT" editorial value.
  • Maintain and grow a strong network of contacts and sources to generate enterprise and exclusive content.
  • Coordinate coverage logistics, including live shots, interviews, and special events.
  • Collaborate with producers, digital teams, and newsroom leadership on editorial planning and content strategy.
  • Lead planning and execution of special projects and major coverage initiatives.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop assignment desk staff and other designated team members.

YOU HAVE: (aka Qualifications)
  • Minimum 3 years of assignment desk experience in large market as Assignment editor, news producer or content newsgathering role. (management or supervisory experience preferred)
  • Should demonstrate strong news judgement. Sharp news instincts and urgency for breaking news
  • Ability to multitask and pivot quickly as stories evolve.
  • Digital-first mindset with a focus on speed and accuracy.
  • knowledge of current affairs with an emphasis on local & state news.
  • Strong logistical ability.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as news coverage demands.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, iNews, live feeds, and social media platforms
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field preferred.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
