N+ Univision 45 is looking for an Sr. Assignment Desk Editor to join our team!
The Sr. Assignment Desk Editor plays a key role in the daily newsgathering operation, helping oversee assignment desk activities and ensuring comprehensive, accurate, and timely coverage across broadcast and digital platforms. This position is responsible for coordinating breaking news coverage, supporting editorial decisions, managing field logistics, and contributing to enterprise story development that serves our community.
ABOUT YOU:
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced newsroom, demonstrating strong news judgment, adaptability, and the ability to perform under pressure while upholding the highest standards of editorial integrity and accuracy.
YOUR DAY-TO-DAY: (aka Responsibilities)
  • Lead the daily operations of the assignment desk, ensuring efficient workflow and clear communication across newsroom teams.
  • Assign, track, and coordinate news crews, including reporters, photographers, and field personnel.
  • Monitor scanners, social media, wires, and other sources to identify breaking and developing news, responding quickly and effectively.
  • Develop, pitch, and execute daily story ideas, with an emphasis on "NEW, NOW, NEXT" editorial value.
  • Maintain and expand a strong network of contacts and sources to generate enterprise and exclusive content.
  • Coordinate coverage logistics, including live shots, interviews, and special events.
  • Collaborate with producers, digital teams, and newsroom leadership on editorial planning and content strategy.
  • Assist in planning and execution of special projects and major coverage initiatives.
  • Provide guidance, training, and day-to-day support to assignment desk staff and other designated team members.

YOU HAVE: (aka Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field preferred OR Minimum of 3 years of assignment desk experience in a large market newsroom as an Assignment Editor, News Producer, or similar newsgathering role. (Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.)
  • Strong news judgment, sharp editorial instincts, and a sense of urgency for breaking news.
  • Ability to multitask and pivot quickly as stories evolve.
  • Digital-first mindset with a focus on speed, accuracy, and audience engagement.
  • Knowledge of current affairs, with an emphasis on local and state news.
  • Strong logistical and organizational skills.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as news coverage demands.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, iNews, live feeds, and social media platforms.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
