Job description

Overview

As the Assignment Manager, you will be responsible for planning, preparing and executing the station's newsgathering functions. This includes, but it not limited to, managing assignments, coordinating vehicle logistics, monitoring phones, scanners, wires, digital platforms and keeping up with local contacts to ensure newsroom is aware of all potential stories and breaking news.

This position is anticipated to work a schedule of Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Responsibilities
  • Plans and assigns the news stories of the day.
  • Reviews all news releases and news wires.
  • Coordinates crews and logistics to make sure the selected stories are covered efficiently with available staff.
  • Monitors police and fire scanners.
  • Attend planning meetings with News Director, Anchors and Reporters.
  • Write and edit stories as assigned
  • Monitors other local and national news sources as well as all digital platforms, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and any other online news sources for story ideas.
  • Provide vacation relief for news program producing
  • Provide vacation relief and assistance for the digital news platforms.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) -OR- 4+ years professional work experience
  • 3+ years' experience as assignment editor in a newsroom.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, insurance and have access to reliable transportation

Other Qualifications

  • Journalism degree preferred.
  • Ability to professionally interact with customer and co-workers via strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations, use logic to address issues and pay careful attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated writing and editorial judgement experience.
  • Strong work ethic with an emphasis on team commitment.
  • Familiar with newsroom producing software.
