Job description

About the Role Working within the department of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, this is a flexible position whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. The Climbing Route Setter is a member of Cougars Athletics and Recreation which actively creates, promotes, and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in sport and leisure. Reporting the Adventure Programming Supervisor, the Climbing Route Setter is part of the programs and services team.

The Climbing Route Setter is responsible for creating fun and challenging roped climbing routes and bouldering problems in the MRU Climbing Centre.

The priorities of a Route Setter are coordinating their routes and problems with the rest of the setting team and ensuring that the Climbing Centre meets the challenge level desired by our users. Varied climbing experience and a sense of creativity are integral to success in this position. Responsibilities Personal Setting (80%) Remove and clean climbing holds from old routes and problems Set up personal rigging system to ensure safety of self and other Route Setters Set creative and challenging routes and problems Grade own routes and problems with assistance from other Route Setters Ensure holds and setting equipment are stored neatly and organized Team Collaboration (15%) Adhere to setting guidelines based on the needs of the facility Assist other Route Setters with grading recommendations and feedback Accessibility and Inclusion (5%) Ensure programs and services are developed and executed with accommodation for access needs Ensure people with varying abilities and circumstances feel a sense of belonging in Recreation programs and services Qualifications Preference given to current Mount Royal University students Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification Training is available for new or expiring staff members as necessary Intermediate-level experience with climbing rope use and safety techniques Training for work-at-height and rope rigging systems will be provided Familiarity with Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) and V-scale grading systems Ability to utilize creativity in route design for a varied climber experience Salary: $21.87 - $27.61 per hour Closing Date: Open until suitable candidates are found
