About Summer Discovery
Summer Discovery is a free, high-quality summer learning program funded by the Ballmer Group and administered through United Way for Southeastern Michigan. The program is designed to prevent summer learning loss and foster personal growth for students across the region, blending hands-on academic instruction, enrichment activities, and social-emotional learning.
The Rhonda Walker Foundation is proud to host the Summer Discovery program this year, providing rising 7th10th grade students in Metro Detroit with engaging ELA/Literacy and Math instruction in a supportive, community-centered environment.
Position Overview
We are seeking passionate, state-certified teachers to deliver high-quality ELA/Literacy and/or Math instruction during our 4-week Summer Discovery program. Teachers will work with small classes of 18 students in a focused afternoon learning environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned ELA/Literacy and/or Math instruction daily
  • Administer Summer Discovery pre- and post-assessments as required
  • Maintain a positive, structured, and culturally responsive classroom environment
  • Collaborate with program staff and fellow teachers to support student success
  • Complete required documentation and participate in program activities
Working Hours:
The expected work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. throughout the duration of the summer program. This is for a seasonal, temporary position for the period of Monday, July 13, 2026, through Friday, August 7, 2026.
Mandatory In-Person Training:
All hired teachers must attend one of the following 3-day paid training sessions prior to the start of the program (June 16th-18th or June 23rd-25th). Training will be held at the St. Johns Resort in Plymouth, MI from 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. each day. Meals will be provided. There will also be another in-person orientation/training required for all staff prior to program start date. (Date & Time - TBD) Pay Rate for Training is $25/hr
Qualifications
Required:
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate (any subject or grade level)
  • Experience working with middle or high school students
  • Commitment to attending all 20 instructional days and mandatory training
  • Passion for equity-centered, engaging summer learning
Preferred:
  • Michigan certification in English Language Arts (ELA) and/or Mathematics
  • Experience teaching diverse urban student populations
  • Familiarity with summer learning or intervention programming
