What Are the Qualifications to Get an MFT Internship?

To qualify for an MFT internship, you must be enrolled in a graduate program or be a recent graduate. You usually need a Board of Behavioral Sciences registration and an active registration number to complete an application for an internship. You may also need your fingerprints on file, a current physical, and an up-to-date tuberculosis skin test. Other qualifications include strong interpersonal, critical thinking, and crisis contact skills, as well as medical billing knowledge. Medical centers may have other specific requirements that you must meet to apply. Once you complete your internship and the required hours, you can take the MFT licensing examination.

What Are MFT Internship Opportunities?

An MFT internship allows an aspiring marriage and family therapy student to gain experience in this field. As an MFT intern, your responsibilities include conducting pre- and post-assessments, meeting with clients, preparing written reports, communicating with support teams, and completing the necessary paperwork for the position. You perform all duties under the supervision of a licensed and experienced marriage and family therapist. Depending on your internship, you may also provide individual and group therapy sessions for clients. Some therapy facilities focus on a specific niche while others offer general counseling and therapy services.
