What Is a MFT Intern and How to Become One

MFT Intern

What Does an MFT Intern Do?

A marriage and family therapist (MFT) starts as an intern to gain valuable experience and first-hand training. In this role, you work under the supervision of a licensed therapist or psychologist and provide services to families and individuals. Your responsibilities include conducting pre- and post-assessments, meeting with clients, preparing written reports, and communicating with support teams. You typically complete an MFT internship as a student to become fully licensed. Other duties include tracking your hours and completing the necessary paperwork to obtain a license to practice.

How to Become an MFT Intern

To become an MFT intern, you need a master's degree in counseling or a closely related field, as well as a strong grasp of the policies and procedures related to marriage and family therapy. Because you may work with children, some states require a background check and a fingerprint card. First aid and CPR certification are also beneficial. To be successful in this position, you must be comfortable working with clients from diverse backgrounds. Additional qualifications include strong interpersonal, communication, and observational skills, along with critical thinking ability.
