Job Title:
Technical Services Senior Archivist
Department:
Libraries | Special Collections and Area Studies
The Technical Services Senior Archivist (Archivist 3) is a member of the Archival Technical Services (ATS) unit, and is responsible for leading the unit's archival intake and receiving program, leading and performing archival accessioning and arrangement and description activities, and coordinating archival supply acquisitions for the Special Collections & Area Studies (SCAS) division. The Archivist is a highly collaborative position, working regularly with all members of the Archival Technical Services unit, as well as with partners in many other units throughout the Special Collections & Area Studies division and across University Libraries.
The Archivist has primary responsibility for leading the unit's archival intake and receiving program. As the leader of this complex, highly collaborative program, the Archivist is responsible for coordinating both the administrative activities (including drafting and executing deeds of gift for archival donations, scheduling collections shipping and drop-offs, receiving and inspecting new arrivals, and keeping tracking systems and unit partners consistently updated), as well as the archival activities (including completing provisional inventories, initial provenance control, stabilization and/or other necessary physical interventions, and location management) critical for new acquisitions. In leading the intake and receiving program, the Archivist is responsible for stewarding a large volume of diverse collection materials, requiring effective time management and a high level of attention to detail.
The Archivist further contributes to the work of the ATS unit by leading and performing core archival work on collections and projects in all areas the unit is responsible for, including: accessioning, full archival processing, preliminary processing, archival description remediation and/or enhancement, and all other activities that support the lifetime custodial needs of archival materials held by the SCAS units. In leading and completing this work, the Archivist applies recognized archival standards and best practices to archival materials in a wide range of size, format, language, topic, and complexity. The Archivist performs this work both independently and as a member of collaborative project teams, serving as both a team lead and team member.
Additionally, the Archivist is responsible for managing the unit's archival supply budget, and directly supports the work of other archivists in the ATS unit and across the SCAS division by coordinating and placing orders for all archival supplies necessary to complete ongoing work, maintaining accurate inventories of archival supplies, and effectively managing archival supply storage rooms.
This position actively supports the teaching and research objectives of University Libraries Special Collections and Area Studies units. University Libraries' faculty and staff embrace Ohio State's Shared Values and strive to enact the behaviors guided by those values in all that we do. This position is dedicated to advancing the culture of University Libraries and the work of the Special Collections and Area Studies unit. All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Required: Master's degree in a relevant field focusing on archives, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 4 years' experience of applied technical services work with archival collections, such as: accessioning, processing, collection surveying, description creation/revision, and/or any other work that directly applies the standards and best practices of the archival profession to describe and/or manage archival collection holdings, including demonstrated experience successfully working on collections of high complexity. Demonstrated knowledge of Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS). Experience effectively leading complex workflows involving many steps. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
Desired: Five or more years' experience accessioning and/or processing archival collections. Experience leading or participating in intake and/or receiving workflows for archival materials. Experience managing budgets.
