Job Description

A Day in the Life of a Life Safety Specialist: 

The Life Safety Specialist provides advanced expertise in the areas of life safety codes, planning, and preventative measures consistent with the guidelines of the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).  This position will support the coordination of maintenance and regulatory compliance for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Fire Systems and Life Safety Measures and provide technical advisement to remedy non-compliance issues concerning federal, state, and local fire code as well as The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. The Life Safety Specialist will ensure compliance with TJC  Life Safety Chapter and Environment of Care fire safety elements of performance.

Here Is What You Will Be Doing:

• Conducts routine building and safety inspections at all Cheyenne Regional campus locations and existing occupancies to identify life safety non-compliance items according to Joint Commission Standards, federal, state and local fire code.

• Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for life safety related work orders, troubleshooting, and coordination of preventative maintenance.

• Ensures recognized regulatory deficiencies are addressed in a timely manner to mitigate risk, preserve life, property and other tangible assets.

• Coordinates with Safety and Security Program Manager to plan, conduct and assess on-going fire drill cycles, staff training, and readiness reporting to meet all identified needs and  requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

• Reviews plans, blueprints, equipment standards and related processes to ensure compliance to life safety standards. Provides technical advisement to management regarding relevant fire code standards and conformity concerning renovations of existing structures or facilities.

• Maintains documents, policies, and procedures to demonstrate implementation of applicable laws and regulations ensuring record keeping practices meet or exceed regulatory requirements.

• Prepares, develops, and maintains reports and staff communication related to fire prevention and suppression activities.

• Coordinates with local fire officials, performs annual regulatory fire prevention/life safety inspections and systems test. Ensures regulatory deficiencies identified by state or local officials are corrected and reviewed prior to follow-up re-inspection.

• Evaluates and executes programs supporting improvement in life safety system maintenance and regulatory compliance. Oversees process improvement activities identified through independent investigation and regulatory surveys.

• Serves on Environment of Care committees/councils as requested and regularly reports on findings.

Here Is What You Will Need:

•Associate Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Fire Science or related field and five (5) or more years of fire prevention and/or fire suppression and/or regulatory life safety code compliance

o OR, high school diploma (or equivalent certificate from an accredited program) and seven (7) or more years of fire prevention and/or fire suppression and/or regulatory life safety code compliance

• 12 Months: NFPA Certified Life Safety Specialist for Healthcare Facility Managers(CLSS-HC) within 12 months of start date

 

Nice to Have:

• Joint Commission survey experience

• Engineering or facilities maintenance experience
