Description:
The job of After School Counselor will provide leadership and facilitation of a school site After School Program. The counselor will coordinate enrichment activities that help students develop and strengthen academic and social skills through collaborative interaction with site staff, students, parents, community and other cooperating school sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. reading stories, listening to students reading, language, spelling, facilitating activities, motor perception programs, colors, number charts, checks homework, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts and reaching their academic goals and potential.
Attends meetings with site Principal and/or Administration, after school staff meetings and training opportunities for the purpose of reviewing and coordinating after school activities and learning new instructional techniques.
Facilitates the collaboration between after school and regular day staff for the purpose of providing a coordinated and meaningful program for the students.
Facilitates the daily operations of the program for the purpose of ensuring student and program success.
Guides and supports after school staff for the purpose of ensuring program success. Identify high priority students through collaboration with site administration and staff for the purpose of providing access to academic, physical and social intervention.
Maintains classroom equipment, work area, students' files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, checking homework, grading papers, emergency cards, audio visual equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, library, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school rules and procedures regarding student behavior and participation and/or providing a safe, respectful and positive multicultural learning environment.
Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying, correcting papers, form preparation, attendance, phone calls, etc.) for the purpose of providing necessary records/materials and helping students succeed.
Plans and schedules academic, recreational, enrichment and health-related activities for the purpose of ensuring the needs of participating students are met.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED
Job related experience is required.
Knowledge and Skills
Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures with specific reference to records management, school curriculum, and course credit system; considerable knowledge of business English, vocabulary, spelling, and arithmetic.
Ability to work effectively with students, administrators and instructional staff, and other school employees, and the central office staff.
Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities; and working with diverse youth
Skill in the proficient operation of a computer terminal to operate a data system, skill in operating word-processing equipment. Good human relations skills.
