Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an analytical and technically minded Water Resources (Flood) Engineer with expertise in inland and coastal flood risk modeling (including storm surge) to join the Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (CAT E&A) team. CAT E&A is an innovative and versatile technical team conducting global location level catastrophe risk evaluations, developing independent solutions and models, and providing quantitative insured loss metrics that inform underwriting decisions.

Your primary role will be to work with our growing Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics team to determine and present BHSI’s view of the flood risk for individual customer’s property portfolio. Moreover, you will be assisting with flood and other natural catastrophe risk assessment to our growing global property book of business. Contributions include undertaking flood risk evaluation using vendor models and internal tools, assisting with individual underwriting decisions, and performing risk accumulation analyses. As a member of the Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics team, you will also work in functional groups to help refine BHSI’s internal flood view and other natural catastrophe risks. The Water Resources Engineer opportunity is in our San Ramon, CA, Boston, MA, or Atlanta GA location(s).

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the flood analytics performed in support of our ongoing business needs.
  • Conduct flood risk evaluation using vendor models and internal tools.
  • Explain flood risk modeling concepts and results to underwriters to inform risk underwriting decisions.
  • Conduct periodic training for underwriters.
  • Work with our team to incorporate BHSI’s view of risk into Catastrophe modeling tools and platform.
  • Contribute to all aspects of natural catastrophe analytics.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in water resources engineering, hydrology, hydraulics, or related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. Previous flood modeling/mapping experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of probability and statistics.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, SQL).
  • Expert GIS knowledge (QGIS, ArcGIS or equivalent) preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented, and team player.

BHSI Offers:

  • Exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework
  • We are a young company with lots of opportunity for you to make your mark!

The base salary range for this position is from $100K – 160K in California, along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.

NOTE: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Team Member may perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization
