Organization:

Founded in 1983, Dolores Street Community Services (DSCS) is a multi-issue, multi-strategy nonprofit organization, with an annual budget of $14 million, based in San Francisco's Mission District. Our mission is to nurture individual wellness and cultivate collective power among low-income and immigrant communities to create a more just society.  We provide direct services to meet immediate needs, as well as affect broader change by engaging in advocacy and community organizing, working on a wide range of issues-from homelessness to housing to immigration to employment.  We believe deeply that these issues are interconnected, and that solidarity and the linking of these issues is core to our work in our efforts to create a more just society.

Position Description:

The Worker Rights Program unites, empowers, and organizes with immigrant workers for dignified work, fair pay, health and safety in the workplace. Workers organize in two collectives, one of men (the Day Labor Program) and one of women (La Colectiva de Mujeres), to build collective power, develop skills, and access dignified work. We are seeking a Full-time Labor Rights Organizer to work with day laborers and domestic workers.

The Worker Rights Program, a program Dolores Street Community Services (DSCS), was established in 1991 to protect the rights of immigrant and mixed status workers in the informal economy, primarily day laborers and domestic workers. The program combines outreach, organization, leadership development, advocacy and direct services to expand workers' rights and develop the political power of day laborers and domestic workers. DLP/WC are co-founders and leaders of the National Network of Day laborers Organization (NDLON), the National Alliance of Home Workers (NDWA), the Progressive Workers Alliance, the California Household Workers Coalition (CDWC), Jobs with Justice and San Francisco Rising, among others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop campaigns that address the needs of day laborers and domestic workers and the structural roots of those needs. Organize with workers to define achievable goals, develop strategies, and develop spokespersons.
  • Collaborate with DSCS to organize members on other issues such as land use, civic engagement, immigrant rights, and housing justice.
  • Recruit and provide welcome and guidance to workers (mostly monolingual Spanish-speaking) by evaluating job readiness, answering questions, and providing relevant information about Workers Center opportunities.
  • Facilitate weekly membership meetings.
  • Ensure membership participation in daily, weekly and monthly meetings, workers' committees, legal clinics, community events, partnerships, and mobilizations.
  • Coordinate work with allies.
  • Create opportunities for members to grow and exercise their leadership skills.
  • Create data storage system to document work.
  • Regularly document activities. Ensure that member information is up-to-date in the database and that all documentation follows DSCS policies and procedures.
  • Provide referrals to financial, mental health, counseling, or other support services that correspond to the needs of the members.
  • Attend and coordinate team meetings to report on activities, resolve issues, and plan future work.
  • Work with program staff to develop, advance, and analyze programming for immigrant day laborers and domestic workers.

Other Organizational Duties:

  • Conduct business in accordance with the DSCS Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and serving the best interests of the agency and the community.
  • Commit yourself to treating each community member with respect and dignity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Background in and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities around issues of affordable housing, land use, and/or immigrant & worker rights; familiarity with these issues in the Mission District and San Francisco, highly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience leading community-based campaigns, including but not limited to: state legislative campaigns; labor organizing; and immigrant rights.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and an understanding of the challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-income residents.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with diverse constituents. Comfort with working in a multiracial, multi-lingual, multi-gender, and multigenerational coalition space.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and trauma informed services and programming.
  • Knowledge and clear understanding of the role of coalitions such as CDWC, NDWA and NDLON.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the strengths, needs, and nuances of the daily life experience of Day Laborers and Domestic Workers.
  • Availability to participate in mobilizations (marches, press conferences, etc.)
  • Superior facilitation and communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and have an interest in developing a variety of new skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and with groups.
  • Fluent in Spanish required, English highly desirable.
