LAYC Career Academy | Washington, DC

The Details

Start Date: Immediate Hire

Salary: Starting at $66,825 (based on education & experience)

Reports To: Director of Academics

Language: Bilingual (English and Spanish)

The Opportunity

The LAYC Career Academy is seeking a skilled, dynamic, dedicated IT Instructor to join us in training students to become professionals in the Information Technology industry. The ideal candidate will have an energetic and flexible nature and demonstrated success in: motivating, educating, building a strong school culture, using data to drive improvements, and achieving outstanding socio-emotional outcomes for opportunity youth.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Plan and provide clear, differentiated, and intentionally focused instruction based on personalized learning plans that include the following information: goals, future path, interests, strengths, skills to master, and deadlines for skill mastery completion
  • Prepare a syllabus for each class stating clear objectives, rules, and expectations
  • Teach the following modules:
    • Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3)
    • Microsoft Office 2019/365 Specialist Certifications
    • CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+ Certifications
  • Align lesson planning to certification objectives and adjust them based on student performance
  • Use data from practice tests to inform lesson planning and the students' personalized learning plans
  • Monitor student performance in practice tests.
  • Hold frequent one-on-one meetings to assist students in tracking their performance by sharing their progress and providing timely and meaningful feedback to maintain or improve academic progression
  • Use a personalized learning plan for each student to set clear goals based on competency mastery within a reasonable time frame
  • Refer students experiencing challenges with content to the Teaching and Learning Specialist so that they can receive additional support and interventions
  • Design and update all instructional resources regularly
  • Help maintain an environment of positive, helpful, open communications.
  • Advise, support, and advocate for students throughout the program and during crucial transitions.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the program’s contribution to its students and externship placement sites.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to improve professional competence
  • Communicate constantly and effectively with the Director of Academics, Academic Support Coordinator, Teaching and Learning Specialist, and Student Support Department
  • Other duties as assigned
The Skills You’ll Need

Success as an Instructor at LAYCCA requires a clear alignment to our mission, core values, and commitment to supporting older youth and young adults in obtaining their GED, industry training, and industry recognized certifications. 

Candidates must meet the following qualification to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two or more years of experience teaching youth or adult learners
  • One or more technical certifications such as:
    • IC3 Digital Literacy Global Standard 6
    • Microsoft Office Specialist: Associate (Office 365 and Office 2019)
    • CompTIA A+ 

The ideal candidate will also bring most of the following skills, attributes and experiences:

  • Possess good classroom management skills and the ability to work with groups of varying ages, abilities, and levels of maturity
  • Experience working with various opportunity youth including justice involved, foster children, ELL students, and students with special needs
  • An interest in creating a hands-on interactive learning environment, motivating students to participate actively
  • Ability to make decisions based on data and observation, providing instruction aligned with student needs
  • Maintain a classroom environment based on principles of positive youth development and restorative justice practices
  • Experience working within Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, and learning management systems
  • Excellent attention to detail, paired with strong organizational, planning, and time management abilities
  • Committed to the principles of positive youth development and equipped with robust interpersonal skills
The People

The IT Instructor will be a member of the academic team and reports to the Director of Academics. This person will also work closely with students, staff, and the broader community on a daily basis.
