The Ferris Care Center (FCC) team provides short-term care in a home-like setting where friends and family can be present during the most difficult times. Nurses focus on intensive medical end-of-life care for patients who can no longer be at home but would rather not be hospitalized. Our approach to care includes comprehensive physical, emotional, social, and spiritual support.

Summary of Job Responsibilities: This position is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of patient care in the FCC setting by following organizational policies/procedures, regulations, industry standards and fiscal accountability. The charge nurse oversees the emotional and physical health and safety of every person in the FCC inpatient unit - staff, patients and family members.

  1. A broad overview and understanding of every patient on the unit, general plan for each patient, pertinent issues/needs, assists in identifying urgent needs for the provider, bed control, rooms status, planning for discharges, etc.
  2. Provide daily RN and CNA shift assignments, coordinate call offs, finding coverage or need to low census staff.
  3. Available to floor nurses for clinical issues that may arise, available for emergent assistance for staff or patients, family issues or complex dynamics, requests for additional DME etc, obtaining scrips for local supply of medications, ordering supplies, etc.
  4. Acts as the Safety officer for the shift; implementing disaster protocols, calling the authorities if indicated, providing support to the staff nurse in a supervisory role when complex family dynamics/issues arise.
  5. Liaison between the FCC/Community and Access teams regarding bed availability.
  6. Coordinates with front desk/security about issues/concerns regarding staff safety or restricted visitors.
  7. Notifies Sr Director, FCC Management, or the Admin on Call for complex questions or issues regarding patient care or staffing
  8. Triaging assignments to floor nurses; taking into consideration complexity and acuity of the floor nurses case load.
  9. Depending on census and other variables, the charge nurse may need to take a routine case load or triage the need to take 1-2 patients for direct care at their discretion to assist with acuity and triage of all patients.
  10. Assist in the coordination of admissions and discharges. This does not entail taking all of the admissions, they may triage to take a patient or patients off the case load of another nurse in order to assist in the completing the admission.

  5. Effectively “manages up” and communicates appropriately to supervisor, including advocating for problem solutions or improvements for care delivery.

Knowledge and Experience

  1. Expert clinician skills to effectively supervise and mentor staff.
  2. Working knowledge of psychosocial issues of patients and families.
  3. Working knowledge of grief and spiritual issues of patients and families.
  4. Good computer skills, including use of internet/intranet and Microsoft office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  5. Ability to effectively navigate an electronic medical record system.
  6. Ability to speak and write in a clear and business-like manner.
  7. Ability to build rapport and relationships with team and both internal and external customers.
  8. The ability to learn quickly and thoroughly while continually recognizing and adapting to changing conditions is critical.
  9. Critical thinking & curiosity; inspired by evidence-based practice
  10. Hospice care, laws and regulations.

Who Should Apply?

  • RN’s with a minimum of one year acute care experience in medical/surgical, ICU, ER or other acute care health setting experience
  • RN’s with strong communication skills and a desire to work in a team environment

Requirements, Pay and Benefits:

  • Must have unrestricted RN license in the State of Colorado
  • Hourly pay: $38.50 - 40.50 (plus other generous differentials/premium pays as applicable)
  • Premium pay for BSN, bilingual fluency and CHPN
  • Participates in the on-call, holiday, weekend, and after-hour’s rotation.
