Job Description

Summary Position Statement

Under the general direction of the Director of Educational Engagement, the Education Coordinator/Educator is responsible for the development and delivery of education programming that crosses discipline boundaries and uses the talents and knowledge of staff and the material and intangible resources of the Anchorage Museum to provide innovative experiences that enhance understanding and foster curiosity about Alaska and the circumpolar North. This position plans and coordinates school field trips and provides administrative support for the Museum's education department. This position is responsible for the maintenance of database information, scheduling, and communication with schools, teachers and administrators, parents and Museum staff.

Essential Functions
  • Creates and facilitates teacher professional development programming such as ASDSA
  • Collaborates with other museum staff to create and edit digital teaching resources
  • Facilitates a variety of programs for all Museum audiences. Programs may include but are not limited to experiences in CoLab, Museum galleries and exhibitions, classes, outdoor spaces, and schools
  • Collaborates with Museum and other content area experts to develop and deliver a wide range of programs for school groups (pre-K through 12), families, the general public, and other members of the Museum's audiences
  • Identifies individual audience needs and goals and implements attainable timelines for projects and programs
  • Works with Marketing and Public Relations on the multiple vehicles used for promotion
  • Participates as part of a team overseeing the arrangement, inventory, and upkeep of CoLab, Museum classrooms, the Discovery Center, and other spaces
  • Works with external education partners, including teachers, administrators and parents, to coordinate and schedule school field trips and process payment.
  • Coordinate and schedule museum educators for outreach programming and events such as portable planetarium, outdoor school, science nights, and others
  • Supports the education department with general administrative needs including material preparations and organization
  • Tracks data related to student visits and create data reports, as needed
  • Supports Museum projects, exhibitions, programs, and events, as needed
Non-Essential Functions
  • Researches, plans, delivers and assesses educational experiences
  • Researches current trends in education and shares with other Museum staff the latest trends and forward-thinking approaches
  • Presents information about Museum educational, program resources and opportunities at networking events
  • Works collaboratively with Museum departments
  • Participates in rentals, private, and/or special events as requested
  • Performs other related tasks as required
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Must have excellent written and oral interpretative skills with the ability to introduce innovative ideas to and to inspire curiosity in diverse audiences
  • Must be a professional, responsible, reliable motivated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience writing curriculum that aligns with state and national educational standards

Ability to:

  • Ability to effectively, serve as an integral part of a project team, and communicate pertinent information to colleagues
  • Must be available for weekend and evening hours
  • Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple competing tasks, and seek supervisory assistance as needed
