Job Description

Job Title: Lifeguard
Department: Pool
Reports to: Aquatics Director
Direct Reports: None
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt

General Summary: The Lifeguard is responsible for implementing all water safety policies and procedures. Supervises members and guests in and around the swimming pool. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Supervise and observe swimmers at all times to ensure their safety
  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with established methods and procedures
  • Administer First Aid, and CPR as necessary
  • Enforce Club rules and regulations regarding pool activities
  • Maintain aquatic safety equipment by inspecting and reporting repairs needed to buoys, floats, ropes, or other equipment installed or used as safety measures.
  • Perform maintenance duties in keeping the pool, deck, and other areas clean, safe, and attractive 
  • Assist and lead aquatic instruction and recreational activities including swimming lessons and swim team
  • Adhere to all club rules and regulations regarding dressing and uniforms 
  • Assist with all opening and closing of the pool facility
  • Perform and record the Chlorine level and PH count on the daily sheet as needed
  • Participate in all In-service training conducted at the pool to ensure retainment of all skills needed for employment
Competencies:    
  • Adequate knowledge of and training in pool chemistry, rescue and surveillance techniques, CPR/AED, and blood-borne pathogens
  • Participates in pool safety programs and risk management
  • Employs only those methods and teaching techniques outlined and approved by the American Red Cross
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform the required role in emergency situations
Requirements
 
Educations/Experience:
  • Some High School courses required
  • Ability to swim laps and dive to the bottom of the pool
  • Must have a current Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate
  • American Red Cross Basic First Aid required training on AED units and possession of a current Red Cross CPR card

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work Conditions: Conditions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully and safely. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities.

Environment: This position operates in a hot, humid, slippery, wet, and somewhat noisy environment. Ability to tolerate the smell of chlorine and frequent exposure to cleaning agents.

Physical: The employee is frequently required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, reach with hands and arms, stoop, stretch, twist, climb stairs, balance, crouch, bend, or kneel. The employee must push, pull, and lift, up to 50 pounds in continuous repetitive motions. Physical exertion over long periods of time. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. 
 
Hearing: The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., conversation with members, medical codes, or alarms).

Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
