Lower and Middle School Counselor Job Description
Job Summary:
Charleston Collegiate School is seeking a full-time lower and middle school counselor for the 2023-2024 school year. Successful candidates will be creative, energetic, and highly skilled professionals who are passionate about supporting students in a student-centered, collaborative, experiential learning environment. Candidates should also have a proven track record of success working with students from age 3 through 8th grade. An ideal candidate will be a licensed professional in counseling, psychology, or social work. Salary range: $50,000-$60,000
Charleston Collegiate School (CCS) is an independent day school which strives to recognize, nurture, and challenge each of its students. Located on Johns Island, SC twenty minutes from Charleston's historic district, CCS is the only co-educational, non-sectarian, preschool through 12th grade, independent school in Charleston's metropolitan area.

Primary responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain student support programming in alignment with CCS's philosophy and mission.
- Provide individual student support, individual counseling, group counseling, and mediation services as needed.
- Provide students and parents with community resources as necessary.
- Offer parent education opportunities throughout the school year.
- Consult with teachers and offer professional development regarding student social/emotional issues.
- Assist with crisis intervention, de-escalation and help process serious events.
- Participate in and support the school's philosophy of Conscious Discipline.
- Collaborate and liaise with external therapists/counselors/psychologists/educational professionals to coordinate student learning with their clinical therapy work.
- Consult with parents to discuss social/emotional/well-being issues as needed.
- Provide short-term supportive counseling to students and refer to appropriate health professionals as needed.
- Provide prevention programming and teach Character Education Classes in the lower & middle school.
- Maintain appropriate records of student meetings and interventions for legal or school related information sharing.
- Commit to continued professional learning and growth.

Essential Qualifications:
- A deep commitment to equity and diversity.

- Experience with experiential education and project-based learning, especially in developing and adapting curriculum for group projects with learning goals in mind.

- A willingness to participate in student-life activities e.g., advisory, club leadership, coaching, after-school programs
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Able to communicate effectively with all constituents: students, parents, teachers, administrators, and outside professionals.
- Ability to maintain strong professional boundaries, especially regarding confidential student information and records.
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject discipline.
- A licensed professional in counseling, psychology or social work.
- A minimum of 3-5 years experience
