Sample Lab Technician II
 

Description:
Allen Flavors, Inc. is seeking a dedicated Sample Technician II to join our Sample Lab team and contribute to the success of our Product Development team. This role requires proficiency in laboratory techniques and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. The Sample Lab Technician II plays a pivotal role in compounding and preparing finished flavor samples to drive new flavor business and maintain existing customer relationships. This position requires a high level of detail, efficiency, and flexibility in a fast-paced environment.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Precise Weighing and Safe Handling: Ensure precise weighing and safe handling of flavor materials utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Accurate Compounding: Compound finished flavors accurately to meet customer requirements.
  • Equipment Calibration: Conduct calibration of lab equipment to maintain accuracy.
  • Knowledge of Flavor Legislation: Maintain awareness of flavor legislation and necessary certifications.
  • Flavor Selection: Select flavors from the database based on customer requirements.
  • Documentation Coordination: Coordinate documentation and records of samples sent to customers.
  • Lot Number Recording: Record lot numbers and compounding records through the company system.
  • Inventory Management: Accurately adjust inventory of Flavor Library flavors using the inventory control system.
  • Formula Stability and Scalability: Ensure availability of materials, stability, and scalability of flavor formulas.
  • Interdepartmental Communication: Communicate with other departments to gain necessary knowledge to fulfill requests.
  • Interdisciplinary Relationships: Develop and maintain strong interdisciplinary relationships with Product Development, Research and Innovation, QC, Flavor Lab, and Manufacturing teams.
  • Project Prioritization: Ability to prioritize numerous projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Communicate results, status, and updates to requestors, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Flavor Library Maintenance: Work with Flavorists and the Product Development team to expand and maintain a dynamic Flavor Library.
  • Sensory Analysis: Lead sensory analysis to select and assign descriptors to library flavors.
  • Knowledge of Stability Issues: Be knowledgeable of flavor formula stability issues and corrective processes.
  • Pilot Plant Operation: Independently operate Pilot Plant equipment specific to customer requests.
  • Spray Dryer Operation: Act as the primary operator of the Spray Dryer with availability to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Onboarding Assistance: Assist with onboarding of new hires by training them on the company’s systems.
  • Company Certified Programs: Understand and implement Company Certified programs such as HACCP, NSF, SQF, Food Defense, and Food Safety and Food Quality programs as required.
  • Positive Attitude: Maintain a positive and action-oriented attitude with both internal and external customers.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education: High School diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, or related field a plus.

Experience: 2-3 years required.

Skills:

  • Good math skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent record-keeping.
  • Lab safety and proper lab documentation required.
  • Computer proficiency – Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Comfort with flavor laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem solver committed to improving efficiency.
  • Team player that is adaptable, responsible, and takes initiative.
