Job Description

Licensed Veterinary Technician

The specifications of duties are outlined below, but it is also very important to ask questions as they arise and to absorb all additional information so that you can better serve our clients and make our care for their pets the very best that it can be.

Veterinary Technician Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the veterinarian during examination of animals, providing restraint as needed to work safely and effectively.
  • Assist the veterinarian during surgery procedures, aiding as directed to expedite a successful surgery.
  • Interact closely with pet owners to determine the cause of their visit and find out the health history of pets.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of client information and billing, and record pet’s health condition such as temperature, body weight etc.
  • Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Perform routine dental cleanings on animals under the direction of the veterinarian.
  • Administer anesthesia to animals, under the direction of the veterinarian, and monitor animals’ responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted.
  • Obtain radiographs of animals with knowledge of proper positioning and techniques.
  • Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery.
  • Perform laboratory tests on blood, urine, and feces, such as urinalyses and blood counts, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
  • Administer emergency first aid, such as performing emergency resuscitation or other lifesaving procedures.
  • Assist in restraining animals during checkups, testing and treatments.
  • form treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Perform routine care of animals as needed and directed such as bathing, cleansing, changing dressings, trimming nails and removing sutures.
  • Collect, prepare, and label samples for laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.
  • Provide the veterinarian with the correct equipment and instruments, as needed.
  • Fill prescriptions, measuring medications and labeling containers accurately.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, performing such tasks as shaving surgical areas, intubating and placing IV catheters.
  • Draw blood as needed from patients, from whatever location the veterinarian may decide.
  • Maintain clean examination rooms and treatment areas.
  • Mentor, educate and assist other technicians and assistants as requested in proper use of equipment and hospital procedures.
  • Confidently, effectively and professionally, educate clients in administering medications to their pets and caring for the pets.
  • Confidently, effectively and professionally educate clients on the need for treatments, medications and preemptive care such as vaccinations, testing and wellness checkups.
  • Perform other duties as requested and assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Perform all duties with a professional, team-oriented temperament.
  • Pay attention to detail, take notes and illustrate a full understanding of hospital activities.
  • Illustrate a true compassion for your job, our patients and clients in executing your duties.
  • Illustrate effectively communication in the English language both in writing and orally.
  • Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Solve problems involving several variables.
  • Regularly stand for extended periods and can reach and feel with hands and arms.
  • Frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Maintain confidence around pets, clients and co-workers.
  • Be familiar with Microsoft Office Programs such as Word and Excel and become proficient in a short time with our veterinary management software.
  • Adopt other technologies adopted by the hospital quickly, positively and effectively.
  • Successfully perform in a busy, sometimes stressful environment.
  • Working well with all team members, treating all with respect, promote a sense of teamwork and single-mindedness toward our hospitals objectives.

Experience, Education, and/or Training

  • High school education required.
  • Current and valid License as veterinary technician, approved to work in the state of Tennessee, associate or bachelor’s degree in related field, and/or 2-3 years’ experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital.

References / Drug Testing

  • References will be requested after a successful candidate interview.
  • All offers are subject to the successful completion of a drug test performed at the hospital’s vendor of choice and at the hospital's expense.
