Job Description

The New Canaan YMCA is looking for an experienced Lifeguard / Aquatics Instructor to be our Waterfront Director at Camp Y-Ki this summer!

Camp Y-Ki runs from June 24 through August 16th, with training dates in advance of camp opening. This is a great opportunity for a summer of outdoor work at Kiwanis Park in New Canaan.

Here, our campers in grades K-5 participate in camp songs, arts & crafts, archery, creative arts, team building, nature classes, both traditional and non-traditional sports, and free swim/lessons. Our Waterfront Director is actively involved with campers, counselors, and other lifeguards to bring energy, fun and, safety to all beach and swimming area activities.

As an extra benefit - All camp staff receive free membership at the New Canaan YMCA for the duration of their employment!

Hourly rate ranges from $19 - $22, depending on experience

GENERAL FUNCTION

Solely responsible for the safety, maintenance, and inventory of the beach, swimming area, and all aquatics equipment. Supervision of aquatic staff, counselors, and campers.

KNOW-HOW

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Experience in Lifeguarding in a camp setting.
  • Current Lifeguarding Certificate required. Waterfront Certification (will certify). American Red Cross small watercraft certification (will certify).
  • Ability and experience in supervising children.
  • Ability and experience in supervising campers and staff.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Position requires lesson planning and assisting with setting up camp approximately one month prior to the camp start date.
  • Must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

  • To know and to be aware of all the responsibilities and expectations outlined in the New Canaan YMCA Lifeguard job description and Handbook.
  • To be a role model throughout each camp day by instilling the YMCA Four Core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Test all campers swim abilities and organize them into three ability-level swim groups.
  • Assure proper set-up and break-down of beach/swim area every day.
  • Represent the Y swim lesson program in a positive manner for continued recruitment of campers for school year lessons by running a quality swim lesson program at Camp Y-KI.
  • Keep accurate swim records for each class to ensure that there is progression in swimmers.
  • In conjunction with the Camp Director, plan and implement a Camp Staff Orientation Program to be held the week prior to camp. With a focus of staff swim abilities, drills, and how to implement lessons.
  • Conduct and record weekly Waterline Drills with all camp staff.
  • Participate in skill drills and training with the Director of Pool Operations.
  • Instruct counselors in proper swimming skills appropriate for each swim level.
  • Supervise and instruct waterfront staff.
  • Plan, attend and assist with: Family Picnics, Special Events, and Specialty Camps.
  • Administer First Aid at Waterfront station and communicate all First Aid to Camp Nurse.
  • Conduct an end of summer inventory and a wish list of supplies for next summer.
  • Arrive each camp day and report to a director by the set start time. When the camp day ends, you must report to a director before you leave. Both arrival and departure times may change at the discretion of the Camp Director (i.e. camp meetings, first day of camp, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as designated by the supervisors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to: climb, kneel, reach, push, swim, balance, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, repetitive motions, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, and sit.
  • The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands: exerting up to 60 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close/far vision, ability to adjust focus, peripheral vision, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Acute hearing is essential to this position.
  • In this position, this person will be frequently required to work in outside weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, this individual may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, wet and/or humid environment, and moderate noise.

  • Ensure the waterfront is always safe.
  • Equipment is kept tidy and organized.
  • Camp staff are fully prepared to teach lessons that match their own swimming abilities.
  • Waterfront staff are professional and fully aware of job expectations.
  • Drills are regularly practiced and up to the standards of the Aquatic Directors.
