Primary Counselor/Therapist (LCDC/LCDC-I, LPC/LPC-A, LMSW, LCSW, LMFT/LMFT-A)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Primary Counselor is responsible for meeting the clinical needs of client receiving services in a 24-hour, co-ed, adult substance abuse treatment center, at detox & residential (RTC) levels of care. A Primary Counselor collaborates within a multidisciplinary team of medical, clinical admissions and recovery professionals to develop and facilitate a treatment plan to support clients in building the initial layers of their recovery foundation. Using clinical knowledge and skills, the Primary Counselor implements clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and address the clinical and psychosocial barriers to a client’s recovery and overall well-being.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Apply DSM-V & ASAM criteria documentation to assign substance use disorder diagnoses and level of care to each client case
  • Complete assessments and documentation including: ASQ assessments, safety planning, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment planning, individual sessions, and discharge planning.
  • Intervene in crisis situations using non-violent crisis interventions.
  • Complete daily progress notes for detox clients.
  • Serves as the clinician on-call in accordance with a rotating schedule.
  • Communicate promptly and effectively within the department and across all departments.
  • Facilitate therapy and psychoeducation groups and complete documentation within the required timeframe.
  • Collaborates with the Discharge Coordinator to structure treatment plans and discharge plans within the required timeframe.
  • Facilitate and document clinically beneficial family sessions and phone calls with clients
  • Engage in collateral communication with referents and outside providers to support client aftercare plans and needs.
  • Conducts AMA-blocking clinical interventions to support clients in overcoming treatment resistance
  • Implements trauma-focused non-violent crisis interventions as necessary
  • Collaborates with clinical team to improve and enhance the clinical program in supporting the needs of client communities
  • Welcomes constructive feedback and has the ability to evaluate suggestions objectively
  • Demonstrates and maintains exemplary attendance and work ethic
  • Promotes a favorable and team-centered work atmosphere
  • Attends in-services and educational training as necessary and as assigned
  • Seeks out opportunities for clinical skill enhancement and incorporates validated knowledge in practice.
  • Maintains flexibility and adaptability in the work environment.
  • Completes clinical service documentation accurately, ethically, and timely in support of clients receiving insurance carrier benefits applied to treatment stay
  • Adheres to the company’s infection control, safety, and ethical standards to support client rights, standards of care, and HHSC & Joint Commission requirements
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrates time-management and problem-solving to follow through with daily program needs
  • Demonstrates customer service with all patrons, business associates, community partners, and team members
  • Adheres to professional code of ethics, scope of care and reports all related concerns in a timely manner
  • Completes all competency assessments as required by the facility.
  • Required to maintain certifications up to date including but not limited to: (clinical licensure, CPR, Verbal De-Escalation, HIPAA, HIV/AIDS, Infection Control, etc.)
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

Position is required to work in indoor and outdoor environments as needed. Potential exposure to client crisis situations. Primary Counselors are assigned company cell phones and laptops for work purposes, as well as the office and tools necessary for their position and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSURE & EDUCATION

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

  • At least 2 years of working with people with behavioral health needs (trauma, mental illness and/or substance abuse)
  • Experience in providing case management services in the mental health or Substance Abuse community
  • Preferred knowledge and experience in 12-step recovery
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • At least one of the following is required: Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC or LCDC-I),Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC or LPC-A), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT or LMFT-A)
  • General knowledge of substance abuse and recovery systems, to include various levels of care
  • Required: Knowledge and application of the DSM-5 in relation to substance use disorder and mood disorder criteria, within scope of practice
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and be flexible in relation to department needs
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards within the department
  • Demonstrates Proficiency in Verbal and written Communication Skills
  • Knowledge of Texas and Federal statutes regarding patient confidentiality and client rights laws
  • Adherence to drug-free company policy
  • Knowledge of NVCI (Non-violent Crisis Intervention)
  • Ability to effectively use technology to organize, document, and communicate
  • Must apply the principles of the Disease Model of Addiction in conceptualizing client and family challenges
  • Must practice from a compassionate and trauma-focused approach when serving clients and their families
  • Ability to apply a person-centered approach when developing treatment/discharge plans with clients and their families
