SUMMARY


Chippewa Government Solutions (CGS), a Sault Tribe Inc. (STI) Federal company, is hiring an experienced Data Scientist/Bioinformatician I to support the Influenza Division of the Center for Disease Control, in Atlanta, Georgia. The incumbent will provide genetic analysis support to improve the vaccine virus selection for influenza. In this role you will construct pipelines and workflows for sequence analysis and build custom algorithms and tools for studying the evolution of influenza viruses.  Reports to the Project Manager and Deputy Project Manager.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct genomic epidemiologic studies on the evolution of influenza viruses.
  • Analyze next generation sequence data from routine and enhanced global surveillance using spatiotemporal, phylodynamic and epidemiologic approaches to determine trends that can be used in making predictive decisions about prevention, treatment and control prevention, treatment and of influenza epidemics or pandemics.
  • Ensure the appropriate genomic analysis methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls are correctly conducted by referring to standard protocols.
  • Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, papers and other documents to highlight findings, accomplishments, and surveillance data. 
  • Participate in special projects and activities and assume responsibilities as assigned.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • 0-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency in a scripting language (such as Python, Perl, R)
  • Experience with Bash
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with the Linux &/ or Unix computing environments required and previous experience implementing processes in a high-performance computing cluster desired.
  • Experience with Snakemak and Nextflow.
  • Experience in one or more Phylogenetic methods – Bayesian, Maximum-Likelihood and Time-scaled. Programs such as FastTree, TimeTree, BEAST, PAML
  • Experience in dataviz (such as GGplot, Matplotlib, PowerBI or Tableau)
  • Highly motivated person with meticulous working habits, precise record-keeping, and strong organizational skills
  • The selected candidate will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance
