Water Plant Operator-All Levels


This position is eligible for a $500 new hire retention incentive after 6 months of successful employment with the City

(external candidates only)!

After your initial training period, this shift will be 8pm-6am for 8 days straight followed by 6 days off.

This position is assigned to the Water Treatment Plant and is responsible for the operation of the plant.

Operator in Training - $23.55

Operator I - $24.72-$37.10(top out) The expected starting salary is $24.72

Operator II - $25.97-$38.94 with midpoint control. The expected starting salary is $25.97.

Operator III - $27.26-$40.89 with midpoint control. The expected starting salary is $27.26.

As part of our Water and Sewer Division, you will be participating in the work of the crew that is responsible for the operation of the water plant. Generally, your schedule will be during the normal workweek, but may require some evening and weekend hours for on call duty responsibilities.

The duties and responsibilities of Plant Operator include:

  • Makes regular rounds to inspect assigned plant operations.
  • Record and enter operational data into the computerized data system (SCADA).
  • Maintains logbook and plant grounds.
  • Cleans and maintains plant; removes trash, cleans floors, and maintains janitorial supplies.
  • Adjusts plant processes as warranted.
  • Inspects and maintains equipment; troubleshoots problems and makes repairs.
  • Performs incremental cleaning of process equipment and structures, pits, etc.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs related duties.

The duties and responsibilities of Plant Operator in Training include:

  • Performs entry trainee level for the water and/or wastewater plant operator line of work;
  • Receives training, education, and experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant operations, monitoring, maintenance, and/or repair of pumps, motors, treatment systems, generators, and related support systems;
  • Performs collection, analysis, reporting, and processing of a variety of samples;
  • Performs routine work and obtains on the job training and guidance from more experienced staff when completing non-routine tasks and functions;
  • Receives orientation and training to plant processes and operations;
  • Assists more experienced operations personnel to acquire skills necessary to perform independently upon completion of training;
  • Operates and maintains a variety of pumps, motors, treatment systems, generators, lift stations and related support systems;
  • Monitors and controls Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems;
  • Monitors emergency bypass pumping;
  • Cleans calibrates, adjusts, and maintains chemical feed systems;
  • Calibrates and adjusts flow meters;
  • Operates and maintains overhead cranes;
  • Collects and processes a variety of samples;
  • Prepares and submits data to be reported in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (Mo DNR) monthly operating reports;

We're looking for someone who is knowledgeable in all aspects of the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems. The intent of the Operator in Training position is to grow into the role of Plant Operator, which requires Class D Missouri Wastewater Treatment certification.

Requirements include:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • To qualify for the Operator in Training position, the candidate must possess at least a Mo DNR Class "D" treatment certification in his/her primary field of employment by no later than two (1) year of appointment. Failure to obtain at least a Mo DNR Class "D" treatment certification in the allotted time frame will result in termination from employment.
  • To Qualify for the Operator position, possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate. A class C or D license is the standard for an entry level position. Opportunities for advancement exist when a class B or A license in obtained.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a Missouri Class A CDL.
  • Aptitude for working with laboratory operations, including arithmetic.Knowledge of the operation and preventative maintenance of a variety of equipment.
  • The ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift objects, climb ladders, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The ability to perform work in an environment where temperatures can vary based on weather conditions.
  • The ability to learn and follow all departmental and city policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.
