Summary Position Statement

Under the general supervision of the Director of Planetarium & Discovery Center/Education Department Manager, the Educator is responsible for the development and delivery of education/learning & engagement programming that crosses discipline boundaries and accesses the material and intangible resources of the Anchorage Museum to provide innovative experiences that enhance understanding and foster curiosity about Alaska and the Circumpolar North.


Essential Functions
  • On-the-floor Facilitation:
    • Facilitation of activities with visitors in a safe and appropriate manner; assessing and maintaining CoLab and Discovery Center safety
    • Responsible for knowing the educational content of activities in CoLab, Discovery Center and the Thomas Planetarium, as well as being able to present and interpret content or concepts to visitors in a professional, friendly, and accessible manner
    • This position will regularly communicate information about CoLab daily operations to the Senior Educators
  • Daily Floor Management:
    • Day-to-day facility operations of the CoLab, the Discovery Center, and the Thomas Planetarium including opening and closing the spaces and learning basic Marine Mechanical duties
    • Ensure adequate staffing including training and overseeing volunteers in preparing hands on activities for visitor use; restocking, replacing, or repairing (as appropriate) necessary supplies
  • Create and facilitate teacher professional development programming, such as ASDSA
  • Collaborate with other museum staff to create and edit digital teaching resources
  • Manage, develop, market, facilitate, and support a variety of programs for all museum audiences. Programs may include but are not limited to experiences in CoLab, planetarium, museum galleries and exhibitions, classes, outdoor spaces, and schools, collaborating with staff across the museum for programs and educational materials and experiences related to exhibitions, major events, and other museum offerings
  • Collaborate with Museum and other content area experts to develop and deliver a wide range of programs for school groups (pre-K through 12), families, the general public, and other members of the Museum's audiences
  • Identify individual audience needs and goals and implement attainable timelines for project and programs
  • Work with Marketing and Public Relations on the multiple vehicles used for promotion
  • Participate as part of a team overseeing the arrangement, inventory, and upkeep of CoLab, Museum classrooms, the Discovery Center, and other spaces
Non-Essential Functions
  • Research, plan, deliver, and assess educational experiences
  • Research current trends in education and share with other Museum staff the latest trends and forward-thinking approaches
  • Participate in rentals, private, and/or special events as requested
  • Perform other related tasks as required
Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of:
  • Must have excellent written and oral interpretative skills with the ability to introduce innovative ideas to and to inspire curiosity in diverse audiences
  • Must be a professional, responsible, reliable motivated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience writing curriculum that aligns with state and national educational standards

Ability to:

  • Ability to effectively, serve as an integral part of a project team, and communicate pertinent information to colleagues
  • Must be available for weekend and evening hours
  • Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple competing tasks, and seek supervisory assistance as needed
  • to utilize appropriate software to manage and track multiple prospects and donors

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education (art, history, or science), museum studies, museum education, the sciences, art, anthropology, history, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience developing and delivering interdisciplinary experiences and resource materials
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience managing projects with discreet timelines and annual

budgetary monitoring

  • Proficiency in curriculum development, distant learning technology and administrative organization and operations
  • Additional experience in the areas listed above may be substituted for the educational requirement
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
