Job Title: Resident Advisor

Reports To: Assistant Director of Residence Life

Location: First Year Residence Halls at Marshall University, Huntington, WV

Compensation: See summary below

FLSA Status: Student Non-Exempt

Company Information

Capstone On-Campus Management (COCM), with headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, is a group of student housing professionals focused exclusively on the management of housing communities owned by non-profits and/or highly affiliated with a university.

Summary

The primary responsibility of a Resident Advisor is to act as a facilitator for the community and to enhance the academic, social, educational, intellectual, physical, vocational, cultural, and environmental development of each of their residents. The Resident Advisor represents the community and acts as a role model for students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Community Development
    1. Identify your residents and know where they live within the first three weeks of the semester.
    2. Notify supervisor of roommate conflicts immediately and assist with roommate mediation sessions/ contracts.
    3. Be available to residents and maintain high level of visibility in the buildings and community.
    4. Encourage residents to take responsibility for incidents and events in the community.
    5. Maintain a positive building community through open communication and programming.
    6. Identify and assist residents with personal, academic, wellness, or other special issues.
    7. Respond and report behavior that is inappropriate.

  • Safety and Security
    1. Interpret and enforce community and institution’s regulations and policies.
    2. Learn and implement building-wide emergency response procedures.
    3. Complete and submit Incident Reports as well as, duty logs following each duty shift.
    4. Respond to situations needing attention.
    5. Observe residents who identify emotional, relationship, psychological, academic or social problems. Intervene appropriately or report as needed.

  • Programming
    1. Coordinate and complete social or educational programs once a month which follows programming curriculum.
    2. Encourage and involve residents to develop and implement programs.
    3. Complete and submit a Program Proposal and flyer for program by given deadline.
    4. Evaluate and complete Program Evaluation within 24 hours of program completion.

  • Facility Management
    1. Assist with room condition assessments prior to Move-In and after Move-Out each semester.
    2. Assist with the opening and closing of the buildings.
    3. Conduct health, safety and maintenance inspections each semester and follow-up accordingly.
    4. Report maintenance concerns for your floor and the buildings.
    5. Complete other facility management responsibilities as assigned.

  • Administrative
    1. Participate in training and administrative tasks which occur prior to classes beginning and after classes end.
    2. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
    3. Perform administrative duties in a thorough and timely manner, including, but not limited to incident reports, occupancy checks each semester, damage billing, surveys, and reporting of maintenance issues.
    4. Participate in RA selection, Move-in/Move-out, RA Training, any Open Houses, Homecoming and other events as assigned.
    5. Attend all in-services, meetings, and events as assigned. This will generally include bi-weekly meeting with supervisor and weekly staff meetings.

  • Front Desk / Office Responsibilities
    1. Remaining behind the front desk to monitor all building access.
    2. Answering the desk phones professionally.
    3. Distributing resident packages.
    4. Assisting residents with work order requests.
    5. Checking in/out loan keys to residents.
    6. Adhering to employment schedule and dress code.
    7. Enforcing policies / procedures of the residence halls and the university (including campus, state and federal regulations).
    8. Other tasks as assigned.

  • Duty
    1. Staff coverage/duty will be required during academic calendar break periods (holidays and extended time).
    2. Participate in an on-call duty rotation with RA staff after business hours and on weekends (requires walking through all buildings and holding/responding to a duty cell phone overnight)

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma.
  • Current student at Marshall University.
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Maintain full-time enrollment and “good standing” with Marshall University
  • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication.
  • Possess strong customer service skills.
  • Must have troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.

Compensation

Compensation is a single occupancy room with a private bathroom in the First Year Residence Halls. It also includes a meal plan during the period of employment (fall and spring semesters, excluding break periods). Resident Advisors also work a minimum of four (4) paid hours each week ($9.50 per hour) at a FYRH front desk during the academic year. Additional desk hours can be worked (max of 12 hours per week) depending on scheduling/availability each semester. Desk hours may also be available for Resident Advisors to work during fall, winter, and/or spring breaks, as well as hall opening/closing periods. Position not eligible for benefits.
