ENGINEER ROLE



American Wire Group (“AWG”), a leading supplier of insulated and bare wire and cable products, and services for infrastructure applications, specializes in renewable energy (wind and solar) and electric utility transmission, distribution, and substation products. AWG seeks an Engineer who wants to learn more about the Cable & Wireless business in a dynamic industry environment. The Engineer will play a significant role in quality control and will spend time in each AWG/CWC warehouse to educate teams on the technical aspects of our products, so that incoming and outgoing inventory meet detailed specs and requirements. In this way, the Engineer will support the highest possible quality of output.

 

The Engineer will report directly to the Engineering Director and will collaborate with the entire Engineering Department. The Engineer will quickly become familiar with common industry standards and specifications that define wire and cable requirements in North America (ICEA, AEIC, CSA, UL). This would be the ideal situation for a recent graduate, eager to take on increasing responsible at a stable company that values and supports professional growth.

 

Scope of Position

The Engineer will apply engineering principles to the wire and cable industry in a technical support capacity. The role has technical, quality assurance and team-building components.


The Engineer will:

 

Leverage Technical Proficiency to Impact AWG’s Products and Productivity

  • Learn, review, and implement industry wire and cable best practices for applications, installation, and manufacturing
  • Coordinate wire and cable testing according to UL, CSA, and IEC
  • Keep up with emerging industry trends
  • Communicate significant trends and changes to leaders of the Engineering Team
  • Incorporate strategies to address these trends in ongoing Trainings
  • Manage time and resources, while working remotely


Meet Industry Standards & Customer Specs Consistently

  • Review customer specifications and identify conformance and exceptions
  • Respond appropriately to internal and external product non-conformance
  • Review supplier product documentation to assess customer specification and industry standard conformance

 

Lead Customized Training at the Warehouses

  • Actively engage in technical inspections training to ensure that the team understands the technical requirements for incoming and outgoing product
  • Note any gaps in knowledge
  • Address them by developing solutions, running them by the leaders of the Engineering Department, and implementing them efficiently
  • Keep leaders and warehouse teams updated on significant industry trends and events, from an engineering perspective


Communicate Effectively with Customers & Internal Clients

  • Demonstrate proficient oral and verbal communication skills in English -- including, technical writing, reports, presentations, and field assessments
  • Review, assess, and respond to customer inquiries, concerns, and issues
  • Understand, explain, and discuss the technical implications of customer questions and challenges
  • Utilize knowledge of customer concerns to drive site customized technical training

 

Build Customer, Corporate and Industry Relationships

·       Travel to customer sites on short notice

  • Travel regularly to corporate offices and distribution centers in North America
  • Participate in customer, vendor, and industry events

 

Keep Current, Informed and Engaged

  • Expand professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, and participating in professional societies
  • Engage in Continuous Improvement; remain curious and informed about industry trends, technology innovations and new thinking that will impact the way AWG thinks about and does business

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 4-year degree in an engineering field from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.) accredited college or university
  • 2-3 years relevant work experience in manufacturing, preferred
  • Up-to-Date industry knowledge, technical and training skills
  • Practical experience with high voltage electrical test (> 1000 V) equipment, preferred
  • Commitment to continuous learning and ongoing skill development
  • A positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to learn
  • Great people skills: ability to work as part of a high-performing team
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to solve problems creatively, on time
  • Flexibility to travel, sometimes on short notice
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Ability to occasionally lift objects up to 25kg unassisted
