Job Description

The veterinary nurse assistant is the doctor’s primary medical support person. They begin the examination procedure by taking a thorough history, and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They assist the doctor(s) in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with clients about their pets in person and over the phone. Additionally, once trained, they will be responsible for educating clients on performing specific home exercises for pets going through a rehabilitation program. They will also be trained in speaking knowledgeably to clients about our services and how they work to achieve the desired goals of pain relief and decreased inflammation etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Support the doctor to ensure quality and compassionate veterinary care to patients, advocate for pets, and educate clients

· Perform all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures

· Obtain relevant health history and information from clients and maintain medical charts

· Assist in maintaining relevant, comprehensive medical records with the support of practice software systems

· Use safe and preferably fear free or similar approach for handling restraining techniques

· Assist the doctor in medical and acupuncture/laser therapy/rehabilitation related (casting for custom orthotics for example) procedures

· Give injections (in the form aquapuncture) while under supervision as directed by the doctor

· Perform laser therapy treatments while under supervision and as directed by the doctor

· Admit and discharge patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state

· Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients

· Understands how to, and can fill prescriptions, understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients

· Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees and is eager to learn

· Performs other duties and assists other staff members as required

· With each hospital function, assists the doctor and the medical team in maximizing productivity and maintaining positive patient flow

· Be willing to guide, mentor, and support fellow team members
