Salary: $70,000 DOE

Purpose of the Position/Role Summary

Reporting to the Director of R&D, the adjuvant scientist will be responsible for formulating emulsions for both swine and cattle biological products, maintaining sterility and performing QC checks on finished products. This role will also maintain equipment and raw materials inventory, and conducting day to day lab operations. The adjuvant scientist assists with the coordination and execution of Bimeda Biologicals development projects, and provides technical support in the development of vaccines/diagnostics as required. The incumbent will interact with other team members, other departments and management for the purpose of determining needs, reporting results, providing technical support for product development/improvement as well interacting with Bimeda HSE and EHS to follow and implement safety policies. 


Key Role Specifics

  • Mix and formulate bulk and test emulsions. Products must be able to pass QA and sterility testing
  • Maintain documentation of products, raw materials and supply chain for raw materials
  • Maintain equipment for emulsification process and inventory of raw materials and finished product
  • Independently lead assigned projects, set project goals and develop project timelines.
  • Collect, maintain, and organize data in the form of a laboratory notebook, bench record, animal record, electronic database, and/or production record.
  • Able to work on weekends and holidays to meet business needs as needed.
  • Able to work on BSL2 level and formulate vaccines.
  • Communicate data/results team members and management, either written or oral reports as needed.
  • Assist to conduct clinical trials as needed
  • Able to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Analyze data/results and provide suggestions for next steps.
  • Prepare and present data for collaborative review and regulatory agencies as needed
  • Knowledge of 9CFR regulations for veterinary biologicals and interface with USDA compliance officers during facility inspections as required.
  • Handle multiple projects and effective time management and keep up with scientific literature and developments in animal health industry.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50-60 lbs.
  • Able to maintain laboratory safety standards according to state and federal guidelines


Competencies Required for the Role


Other Requirements

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Microbiology or related life sciences field and 2-4 years experience working in a laboratory or MS degree with 1-2 years experience
  • Working experience in a formulating emulsions in R&D and production scale
  • Familiarity with aseptic practices and lab work ethics
  • Industry experience working on animal health biologics
  • Understanding of safety standards as mandated by state and federal government
  • Familiarity with vaccine formulation, vaccine production, veterinary biologics, research and development of biologics, quality control and regulatory agencies
  • Working knowledge of 9CFR USDA guidelines for vaccine production and testing
  • Able to understand basic chemistry of emulsions, formulation, stability, mixability, microbiology and biological principles.
  • Knowledge about various mixing process of solutions and QC checks
  • Highly motivated and able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to use a computer for performing assigned duties as needed
  • Open minded individual who is willing to accept and challenge new ideas for vaccine development and animal health
  • Familiarity with IACUC and USDA policies
  • Able to work effectively cross-functionally with all other departments and is a team player
  • Good command of the English language; written and speaking skills

Desirable

  • Experience in an industrial lab or academic lab setting
  • Industry experience; specifically working and formulating adjuvants and vaccines
  • Strong knowledge on scientific principles, bench work and troubleshooting
