SKILL TRADES SUPERVISOR - NILES

Status: Exempt
Reports to: Production Manager

We are a well-established manufacturer with over 68 years of providing quality products to our clients. Phillips Manufacturing is the one-stop shop for drywall finishing accessories, lath, stucco accessories, metal channels, interior framing, and fire-rated assemblies with facilities around the country.

The Skill Trades Supervisor will Coordinate and oversee the activities of the skilled unit. Maintain equipment, tools, and physical plant.

Essential Functions:

  1. Supervise and direct the Skilled Unit.
  2. Determine schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of equipment, and skill of personnel; coordinating efforts with and reports to the Production Manager.
  3. Conduct daily visual inspections of equipment, tooling and physical plant. Recommend and supervise repairs.
  4. Inspect and monitor work areas, examine tools and equipment, and provide employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
  5. Investigate accidents or injuries and prepare reports of findings.
  6. Monitor employees' work levels and review work performance.
  7. Requisition materials and supplies, such as tools, equipment, or replacement materials/parts.
  8. Recommend to Engineering team changes in tooling and equipment to improve reliability, reduce cost, improve safety, and product quality.
  9. Prepare cost estimate for needed equipment, tools, materials/parts, etc.
  10. Maintains preventative maintenance and safety records for forklifts, cranes, fire suppression sprinklers and fire extinguishers.
  11. Improve and execute preventive and predictive maintenance systems and work orders through a computer-based system (MaintainX).
  12. Recommend and/or oversee additional skilled trade educational opportunities.
  13. Handle grievances at first step, which have been initiated by the Skilled Unit personnel.
  14. Work with outside contractors to maintain existing equipment and facilities and/or procure new equipment.
  15. Observe all plant safety rules and regulations, wear proper safety attire at all times.
  16. Manage the cleanliness and efficiency of the skilled trades work areas.

  1. May perform other duties that are not fundamental to the overall purpose and strategic impact of the job.

Job Specifications: KSA's:

  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Good analytical/mathematical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a tape measure, micrometer, ruler and other precision measuring equipment and other equipment/tools of the trade.
  • Ability to work with and/or without close supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and requirements.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to make fair and consistent judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to operate a tape measure, micrometer, ruler and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to operate a computer system, telephone, calculator, copier, fax and other office equipment.
  • Will be computer literate, particularly in preventative maintenance applications.
  • Ability to adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.

Education & Work Experience: Progressive experience in a manufacturing environment maintaining plant, equipment, and tooling; PLC programming experience a plus. Prefer five (5) or more years of experience supervising a team of skilled technicians.

Work Conditions: Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, fumes and limited climate control.
