Accounting Specialist I
(Internal Applicants Only)
Salary: $28.11 / hourly - $31.09 / hourly
(Appointment is generally made at one of the first three steps, depending on qualifications)

Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine clerical accounting work in the processing, preparation and maintenance of financial, accounting and statistical records; processes accounts payable, accounts receivable, Section 8 contracts and rent collections; performs related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDepending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Receives and matches invoices for payment processing; verifies invoice information such as quantities and types of items ordered and purchase order numbers; confers with invoice originator or vendor on questions regarding invoice processing; and
- Provides information on accounts payable procedures, rent collections, Section 8 payments, accounts payable, vendor payments and applicable Housing Authority policies; and
- Enters and retrieves data from a computerized accounting system; and
- Reconciles and prepares payments requests; and
- Receives payments and issues receipts; and
- Receives checks by mail and processes and balances accordingly; and
- Maintains accounting control records and posts records; and
- Makes mathematical calculations; and
- Operates a variety of accounting and clerical office equipment such as a check signing machine, personal computer, typewriter, phone, fax, calculator, copier, scanner and other department specific equipment; and
- Compiles a variety of statistics and financial data for reports and records.
Performs other related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSGraduation from high school or GED; twelve (12) semester units of college training in accounting or finance preferred;
One year of paid experience in maintaining financial or statistical records in an accounting office.
Bilingual skills in ASL, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish are a plus.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of: the specific functional area to which assigned (e.g. accounts receivable or accounts payable); terminology used in financial and statistical recordkeeping; financial record keeping and bookkeeping practices and procedures; office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; computerized accounting programs; standard PC hardware and software including MS Office, Excel and other related programs and systems.
Ability to: prepare, maintain and reconcile various financial, accounting, statistical and numerical records; perform detailed accounting clerical work accurately, make accurate mathematical calculations; learn computer skills and other new technology; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; type at a speed of not less than 40 net wpm.
