The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.

ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. SCOPE OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director of Online Programs, the SLP provides direct speech and language services to deaf and hard of hearing students virtually.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Administers diagnostic evaluations to students seen individually, prepares reports as requested to support IEPs for online partner programs and families;
  • Drafts goals for IEPs in speech, language and hearing therapy for deaf and hard of hearing children;
  • Gives special instruction to deaf and hard of hearing children, as per IEP,
  • Confers with professional colleagues and parents concerning the educational programs and the overall communication needs of children;
  • Recommends strategies to be used in developing and correcting speech and language, auditory training, and works with teachers and other staff;
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, session notes. participates in training;
  • Assists in the development of Individual Education Plans for deaf and hard of hearing students;
  • Attend monthly staff meetings or watch recordings and report back;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION / SKILLS

  • Ability to engage students in learning
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Designs coherent instruction
  • Assesses student learning
  • Ability to plan lessons that are developmentally appropriate
  • Skilled at maintaining accurate records
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, familiarity with use of Google Drive, Google Classroom, Zoom
  • Experience using assorted online apps, games, and programs to support instruction

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a minimum of a Master's Degree in Speech and Language area from a recognized college or university with major course work in speech pathology, communication sciences or deaf education.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Communication therapy methods and techniques utilized in serving deaf children.
  • State License in Speech and Language Pathology.
  • Ability to get licensed in additional states, if requested.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence.
  • ASLPI 3 or above

SALARY AND BENEFITS

HOURS, RATE AND BENEFITS

  • Schedule is determined after hire and ranges from 2-18 hours/week
  • Starting hourly pay range $50-65/hour commensurate with experience
  • There are no benefits for this position
