Position: Juvenile Detention Officer
Starting Salary: Pay Grade 13 - starting salary $18.57 per hour
Work Hours: 40 hours a week

GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of entry-level technical duties to provide for the security, supervision and safety of juveniles assigned to the Detention Center.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Juvenile Detention Center Director, Supervisor or Sergeant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervises the activities of juveniles assigned to the Detention Center to insure compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations; maintains security and discipline; provides for the safety and welfare of residents; monitors and controls access of residents and visitors into and within the facility through the use of video monitors and operation of electronic doors.
Processes residents into and out of the facility; takes photographs and obtains fingerprints; provides for security of valuables in accordance with policy; establishes a file for each resident and maintains detailed records of activities in accordance with established policies and procedures; prepares and submits a variety of administrative records and reports including reports of bookings, releases, incidents, disciplinary procedures and actions, counseling and other activities as required; computer enters resident information.
Conducts orientation of new residents; provides individual counseling to residents; observes residents for proper adjustment; counsels residents concerning personal hygiene; provides or obtains medical aid including first aid or CPR for residents when necessary; administers prescribed medications; provides for and supervises regular exercise and recreation periods; transports residents for medical services and court appearances and provides security while they are outside the facility; and conducts regular fire drills.
Makes rounds and observes conduct and behavior of residents; assesses level of resident threat to self and others; inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors and gates for proper operation or tampering; conducts searches of inmates and facility for contraband; investigates inmate complaints; takes necessary actions to prevent disturbances or escapes; may use force when necessary to maintain discipline and order among residents in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.
Supervises residents assigned to work details within the facility; performs routine maintenance and cleaning of facilities and assists with preparation and serving of meals to residents; supervises and assists residents while performing school education services.
Performs comprehensive janitorial maintenance of the facility; performs general repair work, painting, buffing floors, sanding and painting rooms, snow removal, etc.; launders clothing; conducts inventory of facility supplies as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Educations and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school;
AND
B. Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with youth;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of proper methods of care and management of delinquent and dependent children; juvenile detention regulations, practices and procedures; basic security methods and procedures; judicial system and legal processes; basic counseling and discipline methods and procedures; and youth educational programs processes.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; read, interpret and apply complex written policies, procedures; laws, and regulations governing the operation of juvenile detention facilities; ability to understand and follow detailed verbal instructions; establish and maintain working relationships with residents from culturally diverse groups and their families; prepare and maintain detailed and accurate records; operate video equipment, computer terminals and electronic locks; restrain physically violent residents; and react quickly and appropriately to unusual or unexpected situations under conditions of stress.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Idaho State Drivers License.
Must be 21 years of age.
Must be willing to work rotating shifts and be available on call.
Must not have any significant criminal record as confirmed by NCIC check.
Must be able to meet physical fitness requirements.
Must become POST certified as a corrections officer.
4. Work Environment:
Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, but subject to occasional travel. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a factor for job retention. Various tasks require physical abilities including walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, seeing, speaking and using physical force to defend or restrain others. Normal hand and eye coordination and dexterity are required for writing and typing and operation of equipment. Various tasks require mental application including memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving.
