Under the direction of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent or designee, responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the Town’s water treatment facility, storage tanks and pumping stations in accordance with all State and Federal regulations, standards and procedures.
Responsibilities
Water System Operations:
- Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of equipment and apparatus used in the water treatment plant, river water pumping station, Bancroft Pumping Station, water storage, and facilities, telemetry systems.
- During the regular rotation of the WTP Operators, assume the sole responsibility for the securing of the plant and ensuring that the quality of the drinking water is safe and within established quantity and quality standards.
- Collect or obtain water samples. Perform designated laboratory analyses; interpret findings, and make necessary adjustments to system. Adjust chemical dosages and feed pumps.
- Operate and maintain backwash filter washing equipment.
- Monitor gauges, metering equipment and control panel to observe operations and changes. Take corrective action to alleviate problem areas.
- Make regular inspections and observations of plant operating and process systems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain water treatment plant supplies and equipment. Ensure proper hook-ups where applicable.
- May be required to operate a motorboat to make pond inspections and collect water samples.
- Ensure facility compliance with applicable safety and health regulations and guidelines.
- Connect and repair hazardous chemical feed lines including oxygen and ozone.
Wastewater Collection Operations:
- Respond to emergency situations as required.
- Operate, maintain, and inspect sewer ejector stations that operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
- Make regular inspections of pumps, compressors, and controls of wastewater system components.
- Operate emergency power generators, switchgear, and circuit breakers to maintain system operations.
- Operate and maintain telemeter lines and signals.
LOX System – Ozone Operations:
- Operate and maintain the liquid oxygen ozone generator(s) destruct units, cooling water units and nitrogen boost system.
- Maintain control valves, ozone ambient monitors, ozone residual monitors and liquid oxygen filters and controls.
- Oversee all chemical deliveries including liquid oxygen.
Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Mechanical ability to perform and oversee technicians level treatment facility maintenance and repair.
- Skilled technical level knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and chemical functions.
- Technical level knowledge of wastewater system electrical and mechanical maintenance.
- Ability to maintain harmonious relations with the general public.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and follow all State and Federal Regulations.
- Ability to read water treatment equipment and apparatus.
- Skill in operation of motor vehicles and motorboat.
- Familiarity with SCADA system operation.
- Skill in the operation of treatment facility control panel.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and to make required calculations.
- Knowledge of water treatment system operations.
- Knowledge of standardized chemical analyses and tests as they pertain to safe drinking water and the disposal of waste water.
Education and Experience
Duties require high school diploma; knowledge of water treatment plant operations and related activities; up to two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a Full 3T license and a valid driver’s license. New employee should obtain a Grade 4 license within one-year of hire.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Requires supervisory decisions to assure the production and delivery of water for consumption, fire protection, and commerce. Must have the knowledge, experience, and ability to operate the entire water treatment plant independently and respond to operational issues without direct supervision.
Physical Elements
- May be subject to all weather conditions and extremes while making inspections.
- May be exposed to chemicals or other caustic substances.
- Duties involve continuous walking, standing and or/sitting as well as climbing ladders and stairs to perform maintenance duties and lifting up to 60 pounds on a regular basis.
- Exercise caution when operating motor vehicle or motorboat.
