Title: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner- Substance Abuse

FLSA Category: Exempt

Reports To: Chief Medical Officer

Secondary Reports To: Director of Mental Health and Behavioral Health Services

Job Summary:

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) at Greater Baden Medical Services (GBMS) will provide dedicated, compassionate, clinical care to our patient population as a part of our mental health team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medication management and substance abuse treatment, with a commitment to providing high-quality care to individuals facing mental health challenges and substance use disorders.

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing direct psychiatric patient care and care consultation for patients at GBMS. This position requires strong psychiatric, mental health and substance abuse patient care experience. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner-Substance Abuse practices in a team-based care model and collaborates with other members of the team to care for a panel and a population of patients.

Full-time hours for this position include thirty-two (32) clinical and eight (8) administrative hours with no weekends currently. Subject to change.

Essential Functions:

  1. Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments to evaluate patients' mental health status, including symptoms, medical history, and psychosocial factors.
  2. Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings, incorporating evidence-based practices and patient preferences.
  3. Provide medication management services, including prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medications for patients with mental health disorders.
  4. Offer counseling and psychoeducation to patients and their families on medication use, potential side effects, and adherence to treatment regimens.
  5. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, to coordinate patient care and ensure holistic treatment approaches.
  6. Conduct regular follow-up appointments to monitor treatment progress, adjust medication dosages as needed, and address any concerns or barriers to care.
  7. Offer specialized substance abuse treatment services, including assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based interventions for individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
  8. Provide education and support to patients and their families on substance abuse prevention, harm reduction strategies, and recovery resources.
  9. Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, documentation, and treatment plans in accordance with regulatory standards and best practices.
  10. Stay current with developments in psychiatric nursing practice, pharmacology, and substance abuse treatment modalities through continuing education and professional development activities.

Qualifications:

-Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing with a specialization in Psychiatry/Mental Health.

-Current certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

-Valid state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in Maryland. Active DEA license in Maryland.

-Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in psychiatric nursing, with a focus on medication management and substance abuse treatment preferred.

-Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology and evidence-based treatment modalities for mental health disorders and substance use disorders.

-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members.

-Commitment to providing culturally competent and patient-centered care to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

-Ability to work independently and manage a caseload of patients while adhering to clinical guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Current License to practice medicine in the State of Maryland.
  2. Current Maryland prescriber number, and current D.E.A. and C.D.S. License.
  3. Nurse Practitioner Board certification preferred.
  4. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)

Work Environment

  • This job operates in an outpatient office environment.
  • This role is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and high stress situations or events.
  • Position is required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations.
  • Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public.
  • Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures.
  • Possible exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic and or hospital and medical office environment.
  • May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask if exposed to hospital environment outside of office.
