POSITION TITLE: Firefighter/EMT

Firefighter/Paramedic

DEPARTMENT: Fire Department

SALARY RANGE: Firefighter/EMT $16.15 - $17.65/hour

Firefighter/Paramedic $17.65 - $18.75/hour

HOURS PER WEEK: 53 Hours per week

JOB SUMMARY

Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other calls to protect life and property; participates in fire prevention, training, and station and equipment maintenance activities; receives general supervision from higher level supervisory and management staff and exercises functional and technical supervision over assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

- Respond to fire alarms with assigned company lay and connect hose; operate pumping apparatus; hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders.

- Ventilate burning structures; enter buildings to evacuate occupants.

- Respond to a variety of general emergency rescue calls including auto accidents, gas system leaks and wildland and structural fires, search and rescue incidents.

- Prepare and maintain a variety of firefighting preplan drawings and schematics.

- Operate a variety of portable firefighting equipment including extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, self-contained breathing apparatus, aerial ladder equipment, emergency medical and other rescue equipment.

- Administer medical aid at medical emergencies; applies techniques for the control of bleeding; and utilizes immobilization techniques to stabilize patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications: Requires high school diploma or GED. Ability to pass physical abilities tests. Certification as a Florida FF II, EMT, Paramedics must also be certified in ACLS, ITLS or PHTLS, CPR, be certified by the State of Florida.. Employees are required to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses identified for their position and listed in the most recent version of the NIMS Training Guide within one (1) year of placement into this position. Requires a valid Florida driver license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

- Knowledge of the fire codes and proper methods of maintaining compliance with them.

- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of fire prevention principles and techniques.

- Knowledge of fire suppression principles and techniques.

- Knowledge of firefighting principles, techniques, apparatus, equipment, and precautions.

- Skill in the application of emergency medical service techniques.

- Skill in oral communications for one-on-one and group situations.

- Skill in preparing written reports.

- Ability to remain calm & interact effectively with members of the public in stressful situations.

- For Paramedic - Knowledge of medical terminology and pharmacology.

- For Paramedic - Skill in the treatment of traumatic injury and intravenous therapy.

- For Paramedic - Ability to perform airway management.

Physical Requirements

Work involves significant exertion during firefighting episodes with the potential requirement to move objects weighing up to and exceeding 150 pounds. Performance of assigned duties under emergency conditions may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions such as smoke, flames, and cramped conditions or surroundings. Must be able to wear a respirator as prescribed by NFPA 1500 standards and meet the physical requirements of NFPA 1582.
