POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to a manager in the Environment, Waste, and Radiation Protection (EWRP) Department, the incumbent is responsible for radiation protection in assigned areas and activities. Provide technical leadership, field support, and maintain related technical programs to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices. Additionally, resolve complex problems related to technical radiation protection and manage regulatory documents to meet all requirements.

 

JOB DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

Field Support:

  • Lead medium to large projects and provide technical leadership to other professionals.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations to upper management on impactful issues.
  • Guide research and operations personnel on compliant implementation of radiation protection policies and procedures.
  • Analyze and recommend radiological safety engineering concepts for maintaining workplace safety.
  • Conduct complex radiological hazard reviews and develop safety controls for work environments.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and investigate incidents, recommending solutions.
  • Develop and deliver training to personnel and ensure compliance with radiation protection policies.
  • Foster relationships with Laboratory personnel and support their objectives with radiation protection input.
  • Lead technical review committees and ensure safety in accelerator facility design and operation.

Technical Program Support:

  • Develop and maintain technical program documentation ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Evaluate program performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Compile and submit regulatory reports and act as a point of contact for public and regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor changes in radiation protection laws and update programs accordingly.
  • Lead the review and updating of procedures, policies, and documentation.

Quality Assurance:

  • Review radiation protection surveys and inspections to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Oversee high-risk radiological operations and conduct audits to identify deficiencies.
  • Manage RPG files and records to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight to less experienced staff and lead audit teams.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Physics, Radiological Engineering, Engineering, or related field and 15 years of experience; or M.S. and 10 years of experience; or PhD. and 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Expert knowledge of Federal, state and local regulatory requirements for management of radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, accelerators and transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Recognized advanced practitioner with exceptional technical competence of radiation protection principles and practices as applied to research establishments or other complex facilities.
  • Operational experience of alpha-emitting radionuclide handling facilities, high hazard DOE facilities, or multi-purpose accelerator facilities

Preferred

  • Relevant professional certification
  • Experience with radiation detection and measurement equipment and techniques
  • Experience with external and/or internal dosimetry programs
  • Experience with Microshield, Varskin, MCNP, FLUKA or other relevant modeling codes
  • Ability to identify and solve challenging and complex problems technical or regulatory problems in assigned areas of responsibility, making frequent decisions using solely independent discretion and judgment to implement original and creative technical solutions.
  • Ability to anticipate programmatic needs and assist in planning and implementing improvements and responses to regulatory changes in collaboration with other RPG personnel.
  • Ability to work independently solely under consultative direction.
    Highly effective written and oral communication skills and ability to interact and work effectively with technicians and professionals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability in giving oral presentations or briefings to interdisciplinary audiences, including upper management and senior Managers.
