Training Coordinator


Position Summary:

SMYAL is seeking an individual passionate about youth programming, community empowerment,  and promoting leadership in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their allies. This full-time, salaried position coordinates and facilitates adult-focused learning sessions, and supports SMYAL’s conference presence. The Training Coordinator sits on the Youth Development & Community Engagement team, and reports directly to the Director of Youth Development & Community Engagement. This 40 hours per week position is a hybrid of in-person and virtual work and requires access to reliable transportation for travel around the DC Metro Region for delivery of trainings and events. 

Position Responsibilities:


Training Responsibilities (66%) 

  • Maintain, and generate reports on programmatic data, and track and respond to training requests  
  • Collect and monitor feedback from workshop attendees to identify training strengths and areas of improvement
  • Coordinate the development and execution of a program-specific outreach plan
  • Build and maintain relationships with new and existing training partners (including: youth organizations, schools, other organizations and businesses)
  • In conversation with the Director of Youth Development, identify new topics for, and develop, new trainings for adult-facing audiences
  • Coordinate trainings required for SMYAL grants, contracts, and MOU’s
  • Serve as SMYAL’s primary facilitator for adult-facing learning content, and support as needed the facilitation of youth-facing content
  • Attend seminars, meetings, and community learning events to identify new training methods, topics, and techniques, and use this knowledge to prepare and facilitate future training sessions 
  • Support youth-facing team members in the development of formalized learning content (i.e. for conferences, etc.) 
  • All other relevant duties as assigned

Conference Coordination Responsibilities (33%)

  • Support the Director of Youth Development and Community Engagement in the planning and execution of the annual Rise Up! Youth Leadership Conference, including, but not limited to:
    • Assisting with the development of the conference schedule and event hybrid platform set up (Whova)
    • Coordinate call for proposals, presenter selection, and post-selection coordination (including communications with event speakers: outreach,  scheduling, on-site support) 
    • Coordinate youth registration process 
    • Coordinate the marketing plan with the Marketing & Communications team 
    • Support the securing and coordination of conference in-person day
    • Live, on-site (virtual or in-person) support for all conference days
    • Other duties as assigned 
  • Coordinate SMYAL’s internal staff learning program 
  • Identify conference opportunities for SMYAL staff to present workshops, and assist staff in the creation of workshop materials and applications as needed
  • With Director, Ensure continuity across SMYAL’s conference engagements
  • Support other Youth Development & Community Engagement team’s learning and community events and opportunities on an as needed basis


Position Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in youth work (whether in a peer-to-peer setting, or an adult-to-youth setting)
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating conversations or learnings around LGBTQ+ identity and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion with a wide range of youth or adult audiences
  • Experience working with Queer and Trans youth and youth of color, and knowledge of youth development framework highly desired
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Must be able to work regular evenings and weekends
  • Must be a strong team player with experience in working collaboratively with other team members and stakeholders
  • Must be knowledgeable about and sensitive to issues of diversity, including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
