Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Provide a basic core program for severely handicapped students, including communication, self-help, survival skills, socialization, fine and gross motor, community living skills, community awareness, pre-academics and academics, independence, and responsibility.
- Instruct children with developmental delays using appropriate techniques, equipment, instructional materials, and supplies in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program.
- Develop realistic long and short range goals with each student in areas of delay, allowing for amelioration of handicapping conditions and providing for continued development in areas of pupil strengths.
- Collaborate closely with other special education staff members in the assessment process and program planning, and to ensure the implementation of the I.E.P.
- Direct instructional aide and classroom volunteers.
- Communicate effectively with parents to coordinate the efforts of the school and the home in the improvement of the overall program for the student.
- Collaborate with regular classroom teachers to provide successful integration of the students into the regular program.
- Evaluate student performance, keep up-to-date records of individual student’s progress, recommend revision of the I.E.P., and modify the I.E.P. as necessary.
- Create and maintain an effective learning environment in which a positive self-image and self-help activities are stressed.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Integrate instructional strategies with appropriate technology.
- Facilitate ongoing communication with agencies and professionals serving severely handicapped.
- Participate in staff development awareness opportunities related to the regular curriculum.
- Possession of a valid credential for teaching Severely Handicapped in California is preferred.
- A Master's Degree in Special Education is desirable.
- A basic knowledge of sign language is advantageous.
- Experience in teaching severely handicapped students on an integrated site is beneficial.
- Classroom teaching experience in both regular and special education is preferable.
- Ability to communicate, collaborate, and coordinate effectively with students, parents, and fellow professionals.
