Nurse Practitioner and Director of Student Health Services
Hiram College is seeking a Nurse Practitioner and Director of Student Health Services. This role will administratively manage the Julia Church Health Center and provide primary health care services for full time traditional Hiram College students, promote wellness among students, and serve as the healthcare representative on college committees as assigned.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Diagnose, evaluate, treat and manage acute and chronic illness, disease and injury, independently or in consultation college physician or other medical specialist.
- Maintain up to date collaborative agreement with college physician and consult with college physician when appropriate.
- Make referrals to other medical specialties as appropriate.
- Offer continuity of care as needed, based on original and/or ongoing assessment of student's status.
- Educate and encourage students to recognize and change behavior that have a negative impact on their health.
- Maintain accurate and current patient records.
- Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations.
- Order, interpret and follow up with patients regarding laboratory and other diagnostic studies.
- Prescribe medications as appropriate under DEA and Ohio NP formulary regulations.
- Prescribe physical therapy and other rehabilitative treatments.
- Provide family planning education and services.
- Provide health screening and immunizations.
- Provide and manage allergy injections.
- Provide primary care services, health maintenance care, annual athletic screenings, and travel health consultation.
- Perform minor procedures such as suture removal, splinting, or minor foreign body removals.
- Counsel and educate patients on health behaviors, self-care skills, and treatment options.
- Give clinical support and consultation to nursing, counseling, and athletic training staff.
- Confer with various Hiram College personnel to consult or refer on specific patients or discuss plans, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems.
- Maintain a current CPR BLS/ AED certification as appropriate.
- Understand and comply with Universal Precautions, MSDS, and HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Manage day to day operations, schedule and budget of the Julia Church Health Center.
- Keep current on relevant medical research, technology, and related issues by attending continuing education courses/conferences, professional meetings, reading professional journals and maintain membership in professional organizations.
- Collaborate with registered nurse and coordinator in ordering pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
- Serve on campus-wide committees as requested.
- Orientation and RA Training
Experience, Education and Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner Program with a minimum of 5 -7 years of primary care experience. Previous college health experience is preferred but not required.
- Current and appropriate Advanced Practice – Nurse Practitioner/RN licenses with Prescriptive Authority and approval to practice from the State Ohio Board of Nursing.
- Certification by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner
- Prescriptive privileges in Ohio; NPI numbers, DEA number optional
- Current CPR BLS/AED certification, CPR instructor certification preferred but not required.
- Broad base of technical knowledge and skills needed to perform all assigned clinical and administrative duties.
- Ability to multi-task, triage health problems and handle medical emergencies.
- Ability to speak clearly and comfortably, to use tact, discretion, and sensitivity in dealing with college students, including good interviewing and counseling skills and the ability to explain medical problems and treatments in accurate and understandable lay language.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other providers and others both inside and outside of Hiram College.
- Must work autonomously and demonstrate confidence to act independently in role.
- Ability to mentor/teach and precept students when asked.
