Duty Schedule:

Sunday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (flexible, 20-hours a week). May require evenings and/or weekend hours.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The Peer Navajo Language Tutor will provide tutorial guidance with all students in both spoken and written formats. The tutor will tutor students in Navajo Language ( NAV 101, 102, & 211) and Navajo Indian Studies (NIS 111 & NIS 221) courses; facilitate students learning by helping to clarify course content that requires modeling/speaking the Navajo Language and written assignments.

The tutor will assist with understanding the course content, assist students with writing assignments, research, and editing of papers. This includes, but not limited to, sentence and paragraph structures, grammar rules, argument logic, critical analysis, and citation formats.

TEACHING/COACHING

- Facilitates guided discussions with students, one-to-one or group setting for Navajo Languages (NAV 101, 102, & 211) and Navajo Indian Studies (NIS 111 & NIS 221) courses to clarify assignments without doing the work for the students,

- Applies easy to understand instructions to assist students understand the Navajo Language assignments using proper grammar, pronunciation,
composition, and questions,

- Facilitates guided questions to assist students to think critically and analytically, further helping students understand how to improve their NAV
Language linguistically; includes research and writing skills with NIS courses,

- Guide students through the NAV & NIS writing processes that may include brainstorming & outlining, drafting, revising, proofreading, and editing,

- Assist students with reviewing and understanding Navajo Language: NAV 101,102 & 211 writing assignments, learn to organize thoughts beginning
with a topic,

- Conduct follow-ups with NAV and NIS instructors to understand the assignments as outlined in the Syllabus,

- Assist with on-boarding and orientation for ALL students, including access to the DC Portal: Blackboard, Microsoft, Grammarly and the Learning
Center platform,

- Be recognizance of FERPA when working with all students via referrals and scheduling appointments for tutorial sessions.

DATA COLLECTION & REPORTING

- Become familiar with campus resources, i.e. Library for research platforms,

- Assist with compiling resources to share with students to aid their research needs with the NAV & NIS assignments,

- Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions both individually and in group settings; submit weekly reports to supervisor,

- Important to sign in/out to document hours worked,

- Assist with providing a safe and supported learning environment for ALL students from different multicultural and diverse backgrounds including
students with disabilities,

OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES:

- Assist Learning Center with program planning to ensure student perspectives and insights,

- Special assignments may include evenings and weekend if warranted.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

Must be a current student; completed two or more semesters of the Navajo Language courses; earned 24 or more credit hours; instructor/staff referral/recommendation in courses that demonstrated effective speaking/writing skills in the Navajo Language.

Applicants must be in good academic standing: 3.0 CGPA or higher, B-grade or higher in NAV 101, 102 & 211, and NIS 111 & 221.

Knowledge:

- Knowledgeable of basic Navajo Language and Navajo Indian Studies course with spoken and written formats,

- Knowledgeable of Navajo Language writing processes of essay and research writings,

- Knowledgeable of the APA, MLA, and other writing formats,

- Knowledgeable of FERPA laws in Higher Education setting,

- Knowledgeable of best practices for tutorial guidance in Higher Education setting.

Skills:

- Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites program (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.),

- Demonstrates problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to new conditions and assignments,

- Demonstrates high level of discretion and sound judgment handling confidential information,

- Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual to deliver quality tutorial services with a positive attitude.

Abilities:

- Demonstrates and adhere to the college's values: T'áá hó 'ájí t'éego, Ahil na'anish, Il ídlí, and Il ééhózin in a work setting,

- Demonstrates ability to build positive relationship with students whom have diverse background, including students with disabilities,

- Demonstrates understanding of the role of Peer Navajo Language Tutor; provide guidance and support to enhance students' learning and
development.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

- Attend/complete First AID & CPR AED training; ability to lift, push/pull and carry 25 lbs; work flexible hours totaling 20-hours a week.

Other Requirement(s):

- Ability to speak and understand the Navajo Language is welcomed,

- This a grant funded position, the position requires working on-site.
