Job Description

May include:

  • Create, revise, and sustain HVAC product designs, utilizing knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Ensure on-time completion of high quality gas furnace projects within agreed upon budget. These products include, but are not limited to, gas furnaces, packaged gas products, air handlers, coils, air conditioners, and heat pumps.
  • Development and sustaining engineering activities in support of Gas Furnace and Gas Packaged Product Development
  • Ensure compliance with all product safety testing, passing industry recognized safety tests for gas appliances.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure proper testing of components separately and as part of the entire system.
  • Develop and manage project schedules related to new and existing product designs.
  • Analyze product designs using tolerance, thermodynamic, finite element, and computational fluid dynamic analyses.
  • Analyze test data as well as the method and type of data collected to understand it in a deep meaningful way.
  • Document product designs by preparing bills of materials, cost analyses, drawings, and manage engineering change requests (ECRs).
  • Assist in redesigning internal components to improve overall long term system quality, improve efficiency and reduce cost.
  • Develop engineering solutions to product related issues through problem solving and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to launch products, resolve issues, and support product improvements.
  • Participate with project planning sessions and develop aggressive yet realistic project deadlines.
  • Coordinate project work internally with the department and externally with other departments to ensure on-time completion of projects within budget.
  • Practice proactive project management to ensure on-time delivery and learning from each project to apply lesson’s learned to next projects
  • Work with suppliers to improve quality and resolve product issues.
  • Assist manufacturing with product launches and issue resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects related to product design and quality.
  • Become a Certified Gas Engineer from the American Society of Gas Engineers, if not already.

Nature and Scope

  • May provide guidance, knowledge advisor and mentor.
  • Works with the Goodman Design Engineering team to develop and sustain HVAC-related residential gas heating products- gas furnaces, packaged gas products, air handlers, coils, air conditioners, heat pumps, etc..
  • Responsibilities include the design, analysis, and documentation of those products and their internal components.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding and knowledge of combustion systems and mechanical design theory and practice.
  • Experience with design for six sigma (DFSS), design failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA), design of experiments methodology, tolerance analysis, value engineering principles, and parts standardization principles (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of material science and metallurgy with regard to gas heat exchanger design.
  • Knowledge of specifications and standards used in the gas appliance and HVAC industry (required).
  • Experience with engineering change processes and CAD systems---Pro/E and SolidEdge is a plus.
  • Knowledge of specifications and standards used in the HVAC industry (preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of software/PC applications including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills - both verbal and written including follow up skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills including project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, team player, results orientated, dedication to excellence and sense of urgency to achieve business objectives.
  • Ability to use good judgement, decision-making skills and strong work ethics and integrity.
