Title: Assistant Technical Director- Sr Pigment Dispersion R&D Formulation Scientist

Experience: Mid-Senior Level

Job Description:

Immediate need for a Sr. Pigment Dispersion Formulation Scientist based out of our R&D Laboratory and plant in St. Louis, MO. Reporting to the Technical Director, the selected individual will provide senior level research and development expertise to identify, develop, scale up and commercialize innovative pigment dispersion solutions for the coatings industry. We seek a seasoned individual possessing an entrepreneurial spirit and creativity to formulate, apply and evaluate new chemistries into novel coatings and adhesives. The successful candidate will collaborate with representatives from a cross-functional team to identify trends, consumer insights and new market opportunities. Responsibilities:

• Conducting lab experiments to gain a deep understanding of coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomer products and develop accompanying pigment dispersion formulations

• Utilizing scientific and technical expertise to identify customer insights and new technologies

• Completing lab projects based upon management directives and sales opportunities

• Demonstrating leadership and technical expertise in the lab and field

• Demonstrating the ability to collaborate with a cross functional team to accomplish objectives

• Fostering a safe work environment and complying with all laws, rules and regulations

• Using Formulating Software, Design of Experiment other computer based statistical tools

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science or Master of Science or higher in Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering, Material Science or Polymer Science/Engineering

• Ten (10) or more years' Technical and application experience in one or more of the following:

  • Pigment Dispersions

• Industrial Coatings

• Paint

• Additives

• Heavy Duty Maintenance

• Direct to Metal Coatings

• Corrosion Resistant Coatings

• Chemical Resistant Coatings

• 2-Component, Thermoset

• Experience in technical research and development (academic research experience is applicable)

• Formulating, applying, curing and evaluating high colorants in performance coatings

• Experience using amine curing agents in the production of epoxy, polyurethane, polyester and/or acrylic based coatings

• Experience with phenolic, epoxy, polyester and/or acrylic based thermoset coatings

Zero travel. 100% in office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Organic Chemistry

• Experience formulating pigment dispersions or a wide variety of coatings formulas

• Experience with adhesive formulations

• Project Management Experience

• Experience in roles with significant customer interaction

• Experience bringing products from concept to commercialization

• Project management and leadership experience

Develop formulations and related applications for new products; support product promotion and customer support functions; and conduct routine and non routine testing procedures.

  • Create new or modify existing experimental formulas and finalize pigment dispersion formulas.
  • Produce batches of dispersion based on existing and new formulations
  • Develop moderately complex formulations with existing products including multiple raw material substitutions, modification of performance properties, and similar.
  • Analyze factors that influences paint properties and interactions between raw materials.
  • Perform product testing and application testing: identify and prioritize tests to perform and analyze performance properties.
  • Anticipate and understand impact of calculations and recalculations of materials.
  • Generate, summarize, and communicate results to management and clients.
  • Serve as subject matter expert related to structure-property relationships for coating chemistries (primarily on epoxy chemistry), paint formulations, raw materials, and similar.
