Summary
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) requires an Environmental Technician. This position, as assigned and in accordance with prescribed instructions and established standards, will have the primary responsibility of assisting public water systems in developing water service line inventories to comply with the determined compliance date under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR).
This position will work under the supervision of a superior from whom instructions are received concerning policies and objectives. Work reports are subject to review for adequacy and determination of remedial action necessary. Training on software platforms/webpage interface will be provided.
Responsibilities
· Review data and inventories submitted by water systems to ensure that the submittals align with the data requirements of the State service line inventory database
· Communicate with water systems on the status of inventory development
· Conduct field visits and inspections as needed to review physical service line record files, and/or assist in the visual inspection of service lines
· Develop periodic update reports on inventory metrics
· Assist the Lead and Copper Rule Manager and the inventory Project Manager to ensure that water systems are working toward compliance with the deadline
· Review inventory information submitted by the 176 Rhode Island Public Water Systems (PWS) that are subject to the LCRR and the Rhode Island Lead Poisoning and Prevention Act (LPPA)
· Track customer notification and risk mitigation activities when lead pipes are discovered, disturbed, or replaced
· Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
· An interest in Environmental Science/Engineering
· An interest in protecting public health
· A working knowledge of software platforms such as Microsoft Office
· A familiarity with state public health laws, rules, and regulations
· Ability to prepare reports containing findings
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors, and the public and other related capacities and abilities.
Education and Experience
· Education: Such as may have been gained through graduation from a college of recognized standing, or a current student working toward a degree
· Major courses in the Biological and Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental or Civil Engineering, or courses closely related to environmental science
· Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience
