Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.

CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi, and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

TITLE: CLINICAL COORDINATOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

REPORTS TO: Director, Physician Assistant Program

DLSE STATUS: Exempt

SALARY: $120,000

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Assistant Professor will perform a set of specific administrative duties in the clinical year, as well as provide support to other program-related functions such as admissions, program evaluation, and program reports, on a full-time basis. The Assistant Professor will also teach the program curriculum, as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participating (as a part of the clinical coordination team), in ensuring that clinical year functions meet ARC-PA standards.
  • Engaging in clinical skills training sessions and other clinical training activities
  • Securing clinical affiliates, student placements, and clinical site correspondence
  • Engaging and supporting clinical preceptors
  • Participating in reviewing and approving clinical year rotation materials (contacts, handouts)
  • Participating in the development, implementation, and assessment of clinical evaluation process; scheduling site, preceptor, and student evaluations
  • Participating in maintaining student files of academic performance during the clinical year, such as major exams per rotation, correspondence regarding clinical rotation progress, or any other clinically related activity
  • Participating in clinical assignments including, but not limited to, proctoring of physical exam checklist, OSCEs, site visits, and community-based activities.
  • Participating in planning and implementation of End of Rotation (EOR) week activities
  • Evaluating student clinical performance; collecting and summarizing student evaluation data.
  • Counseling students regarding clinical performance
  • Referring students with academic, behavioral, or professional issues to the director, faculty, or program committee
  • Participating in maintaining annual files of the rotation site administration
  • Preparation of documentation and submission of reports for grants, self-studies, annual reports, etc. as assigned.
  • Providing student instruction
  • Evaluating student performance
  • Academic counseling of students
  • Assuring the availability of remedial instruction
  • Participating in curriculum revision and development
  • Evaluating the program
  • Preparing clear and concise written reports
  • Performing program, college, community, and professional service activities
  • Performing research and/or other scholarly activities
  • Participating in program, college, university committees, and attending related functions; attending program meetings
  • Engaging in recruiting prospective students, reviewing prospective student applicant files, interviewing applicants, and selecting a final class roster for admissions to the PA program

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • NCCPA Certification is preferred, but not required.
  • California Physician Assistant licensure or eligibility for California licensure (preferred, but not required).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two or more years in education are preferred.
  • At least two years of experience as a PA in clinical practice is preferred (but not required).
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY/SKILLS:

  • PC proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; able to summarize and prioritize work products and processes; proactive communication with supervisors, peers, and team members to maintain efficiency and productivity and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the skills and tasks performed by a primary care physician assistant.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations to the practice of physician assistants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analysis, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated instructional and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of programs and student evaluation systems.
  • Knowledge of physician assistant practice laws and an understanding of primary care medicine.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to interface with students, faculty, staff, and community members with tact and clarity.
