TEACHER ASSISTANT

MEMBER DETAILS: Summary of Service Opportunity: AmeriCorps members will serve as part-time Teacher Assistants, providing small group and one-on-one instruction for the Summer Advantage and Reading Advantage programs at one of five Phalen Leadership Academies ("PLA") schools in Indianapolis, including PLA @48, PLA @93, PLA @ 103, George and Veronica Phalen Leadership Academy, and James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy. At the end of the first program year, AmeriCorps members will be responsible for helping students, who we call scholars, increase their math and reading proficiency, improve their self-esteem and engagement in school, and more deeply engage families in their children's education.

POSITION DETAILS: Service Position Description: As an AmeriCorps Teacher Assistant, you will serve under the direct supervision of the AmeriCorps Program Director and our Reading Advantage Team to deliver small group and one-on-one instruction in support of our literacy tutoring program, Reading Advantage. In addition to the school year assignment, AmeriCorps members will also provide academic, enrichment, and social-emotional lessons during our 5-week summer learning program, Summer Advantage.

Essential Position Tasks:

+ Deliver planned small group differentiated instruction.

  • Participate in training activities to support program implementation.

  • Support program goals of scholars reporting they are gaining confidence in reading and math skills, parents recommending the program to other parents, and scholars attending programs daily.

  • Utilize student data to create individualized plans for scholar success.

  • Assist teachers in preparation of progress reports.

  • Maintain parental/guardian communication to support scholar growth and involvement.

  • Conference with parents and families, as needed.

+ Prepare and teach engaging enrichment activities (Summer Advantage specific).

Minimum Position Experience and Skills:

+ One (1) year or program season of experience working in a direct service position with youth

  • Previous work or volunteer experience as an academic tutor or youth programs professional

  • Intermediate computer and internet skills

Minimum Education, Licensure and or Certification:

+ 1-year advanced course work in the areas of education, social work, or a related field

  • BA in education, social work, youth development or any related field, preferred

  • Experience using Fountas and Pinnell Leveled LLI system, preferred

  • Successfully able multi-task with strong attention to detail

  • Patience with working with scholars, families, and staff

  • Ability to work well with diverse populations

  • Open mindedness to new technology, processes, and procedures

  • Troubleshooting/problem-solving skills

  • Enthusiastic and engaging when communicating with scholars
