Primary Purpose:

The Irene Leache Curator of European Art is responsible for the research, interpretation, display, and stewardship of the Museum’s collection of European Art before 1945, as well as organizing temporary exhibitions on the same.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in the ongoing development of the institution’s overall curatorial vision.
  • Work with colleagues to establish collegial, inclusive approaches to exhibition selection and development, art acquisitions, and interpretation.
  • Work with Director, Director of Curatorial Affairs, Curators, and other colleagues to present a balanced, challenging, and accessible schedule of shows.
  • Contribute in efforts to develop and market nationally and internationally traveling exhibitions – both loan shows and those drawn from the museum collections.
  • With the Director of Curatorial Affairs, colleagues, and other internal stakeholders, implement the collection-development plan.
  • Develop and refine the collection and display of European Art before 1945, defined as all types of work produced in Europe before 1945, exempting Glass and Photography, in the Museum’s galleries.
  • Research and publish scholarship on European Art before 1945 in the Museum’s collection.
  • Work with collectors, donors, and dealers to cultivate gifts and loans, with the aim of enhancing and refining the Museum’s collections.
  • Work with the Director of Curatorial Affairs and Conservation division to monitor the condition of European works from before 1945 in the collection, select works for treatment, and implement comprehensive collection care.
  • Participate in promoting the Chrysler’s collections through exhibitions, loans, research, publications, professional contacts, speaking engagements, and other outreach opportunities.
  • Participate in events and activities related to the Museum’s various affiliated donor and stewardship groups, participating in institutional fundraising efforts as directed.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the museum locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Art History strongly preferred, or comparable track record of scholarly exhibitions and publications.
  • Art-historical knowledge in European Art.
  • Ability to talk comfortably and gauge scholarship about art/art history in general, beyond one’s field of expertise.

Preferred Experience, and KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Knowledge of more than one of the Chrysler’s collecting fields is desirable.
  • Knowledge of one or more European languages in addition to English.
  • Ability to develop and market exhibitions of the museum’s collections to be shown in-house and to travel. Contacts with collectors and other museums a plus.
  • Comfort with cross-disciplinary approach to exhibition development.
  • Ability to work with a conservator to set priorities for collection conservation.

Working Conditions:

Position will be based in a busy office environment and will be subject to frequent interruptions. Must be available for occasional travel, including overseas.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift and carry file boxes and other awkward items weighing up to 25 lbs., including up and down stairs. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday. Must be able to see and hear, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
