Perioperative/Scheduling Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Functions as the Perioperative/Scheduling Technician to Brown Urology with primary accountability to the Practice Manager and to the surgeons. Primary duty is scheduling and coordinating patients for surgical procedures, obtaining insurance, authorizations and advising patients of surgical and financial requirements. Responsible for the management of surgeon’s operative schedule to assure scheduling accuracy and patient readiness. Expert handling of patient issues with excellent customer service skills and patient confidentiality are mandatory.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for scheduling all surgical procedures, ensure completion of required paperwork and distributes applicable paperwork to internal and external parties to coordinate surgeries.
- Ability to take vital signs and report findings to RN on duty.
- Patient chart compilation, both minor cases and anesthesia cases.
- Ability to check patients into the facility and discharge.
- Able to check and print documentation that all prerequisite testing has been completed in order for the procedure to move forward.
- Obtain and properly document electronic medical record the patient’s vital signs, past medical, social, and surgical history, allergies, and medications.
- Manages and maintains accuracy of Physician Outlook Calendar and in the eCW Out of Office encounters section to reflect scheduled surgeries.
- Reviews all preoperative and postoperative directions and coordinates the post-op visit appointment when applicable.
- Obtain all necessary authorizations for surgical procedures.
- Facilitate in-patient admissions from the office.
- Review with patients all patient forms and all insurance requirements including anticipated out of pocket costs.
- Place confirmation calls to patients prior to scheduled date of procedure.
- Review financial and clinical paperwork to assure completion before the scheduled procedure or surgery date. Submit patient clinical and financial information to facility.
- Prepares examination rooms for provider needs during office hours including proper cleaning, stocking of supplies in assigned examination rooms.
- Proper collection, handling, labeling and documentation of all specimens and ensuring delivery of specimens to the pathology lab.
- Communicate with other members regarding the patient’s condition.
- Completes documentation in an accurate timely manner.
- Knowledge of state, federal and AAAHC regulations.
- Preparation of OR charts.
- Answer and triage telephone calls in a courteous manner and enter all messages into EMR
- Verify that all surgical cases are entered into the practice management system to ensure timely reimbursement
- Familiarity with environment-of-care, infection control, and HIPAA practices
- Responsible for any other duties, which may be assigned, to facilitate the overall improvement in patient care as may be assigned by the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Certified Nursing Assistant and/or Certified Medical Assistant
Maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
Minimum 2 years of relevant ORT/Surgical Technician experience desirable
